Abstract: | Relatively oxygen-free mesoporous cubic ZnS particles were synthesised via a facile solvo-hydrothermal route using a water–acetonitrile combination. Boosted UV emission at 349 nm is observed from the ZnS prepared by the solvo-hydrothermal route. The increased intensity of this UV emission is attributed to activation of whispering gallery modes of almost elliptical microstructures made of porous nanostructures. |

Abstract: | Urinary stones resected from urinary bladders of patients hailing from Kollam district of Kerala State, India were analyzed by SEM, XRD and by thermal analysis techniques. The analytical results indicate that, stones have different composition, i.e., calcium phosphate, calcium phosphate hydroxide and sodium calcium carbonate. Infrared spectral studies also reveal the presence of phosphates or carbonates in these samples. Further, IR spectral investigations have revealed that amorphous carbonated species are occupied in PO4 sites in calcium phosphate type stone and OH sites in calcium phosphate hydroxide sample. Thermal studies of these samples also reveal that, carbon dioxide is released from carbonated samples upon heating which is related to amount of carbon content and bond strength. Crystals with defects and irregular morphology are grown inside the urinary bladder due to variation in crystal growth conditions |

Abstract: | Polyaniline thin films were prepared by ac plasma polymerization technique. Capacitance, dielectric loss, dielectric constant and ac conductivity of these films were investigated in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 1MHz and in the temperature range from 300 to 373 K. Capacitance and dielectric loss decreased with frequency and increased with temperature. This type of behaviour was found to be in good agreement with an existing model. The ac conductivity σ(ω) was found to vary as ωs with the index s 1. Annealing of polyaniline thin films in high vacuum at 373K for 1 h was found to reduce the dielectric loss. FTIR studies reveal that the aromatic ring is retained in the polyaniline thin films, which enhances the thermal stability of the polymer films |

Abstract: | The radio frequency plasma generated during the sputtering of Indium Tin Oxide target using Argon was analyzed by Langmuir probe and optical-emission spectroscopy. The basic plasma parameters such as electron temperature and ion density were evaluated. These studies were carried out by varying the RF power from 20 to 50 W. A linear increase in ion density and an exponential decrease in electron temperature with rf power were observed. The measured plasma parameters were then correlated with the properties of ITO thin films deposited under similar plasma conditions. |

Abstract: | Manganites belonging to the series Gd1−xSrxMnO3 (x=0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) were prepared by wet solid-state reaction and their thermoelectric power was evaluated. Thermoelectric power measurements revealed a peak value at ∼40 K. All the samples exhibited a colossal thermopower at ∼40K and in that Gd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 exhibited a maximum value of ∼35mV/K, which is the largest reported for these class of materials at this temperature. Temperaturedependent magnetisation measurements showed that the samples exhibit a phase transition from paramagnetic to spin-glass–like state at these temperatures. Plausible mechanisms responsible for the observed colossal thermoelectric power in Gd-Sr manganites are discussed |

Abstract: | Electrical properties of ac plasma polymerized aniline thin films are investigated with a view of determining the dominant conduction mechanism. The current–voltage (I–V) characteristics in symmetric and asymmetric electrode configuration for polyaniline thin films in the thickness range from 1300 to 2000 A ° are investigated. From the studies on asymmetric electrode configuration, it is found that the dominant conduction mechanism in these films is of Schottky type |

Abstract: | The present work derives motivation from the so called surface/interfacial magnetism in core shell structures and commercial samples of Fe3O4 and c Fe2O3 with sizes ranging from 20 to 30 nm were coated with polyaniline using plasma polymerization and studied. The High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy images indicate a core shell structure after polyaniline coating and exhibited an increase in saturation magnetization by 2 emu/g. For confirmation, plasma polymerization was performed on maghemite nanoparticles which also exhibited an increase in saturation magnetization. This enhanced magnetization is rather surprising and the reason is found to be an interfacial phenomenon resulting from a contact potential. |

Abstract: | Copper doped methylene blue sensitized poly(vinyl alcohol) (MBPVA)–acrylamide films were fabricated to improve the storage life of recorded gratings. The films were fabricated using gravity settling method and the copper chloride concentration was optimized as 3:18 10 3 mol/l for a dye concentration of 6:2 10 4 mol/l. The gratings recorded on the optimized film constitution could be stored for months with stable diffraction efficiency (24%) without any chemical or thermal fixing techniques. The resolution of the material is found to be unaffected with the addition of copper chloride. |

Abstract: | The creation of three-dimensionally engineered nanoporous architectures via covalently interconnected nanoscale building blocks remains one of the fundamental challenges in nanotechnology. Here we report the synthesis of ordered, stacked macroscopic three-dimensional (3D) solid scaffolds of graphene oxide (GO) fabricated via chemical cross-linking of two-dimensional GO building blocks. The resulting 3D GO network solids form highly porous interconnected structures, and the controlled reduction of these structures leads to formation of 3D conductive graphene scaffolds. These 3D architectures show promise for potential applications such as gas storage; CO2 gas adsorption measurements carried out under ambient conditions show high sorption capacity, demonstrating the possibility of creating new functional carbon solids starting with two-dimensional carbon layers |

Abstract: | A new geometry (semiannular) for Josephson junction has been proposed and theoretical studies have shown that the new geometry is useful for electronic applications [1, 2]. In this work we study the voltage‐current response of the junction with a periodic modulation. The fluxon experiences an oscillating potential in the presence of the ac‐bias which increases the depinning current value. We show that in a system with periodic boundary conditions, average progressive motion of fluxon commences after the amplitude of the ac drive exceeds a certain threshold value. The analytic studies are justified by simulating the equation using finite‐difference method. We observe creation and annihilation of fluxons in semiannular Josephson junction with an ac‐bias in the presence of an external magnetic field. |

Abstract: | Thin film solar cells having structure CuInS2/In2S3 were fabricated using chemical spray pyrolysis (CSP) technique over ITO coated glass. Top electrode was silver film (area 0.05 cm2). Cu/In ratio and S/Cu in the precursor solution for CuInS2 were fixed as 1.2 and 5 respectively. In/S ratio in the precursor solution for In2S3 was fixed as 1.2/8. An efficiency of 0.6% (fill factor -37.6%) was obtained. Cu diffusion to the In2S3 layer, which deteriorates junction properties, is inevitable in CuInS2/In2S3 cell. So to decrease this effect and to ensure a Cu-free In2S3 layer at the top of the cell, Cu/In ratio was reduced to 1. Then a remarkable increase in short circuit current density was occurred from 3 mA/cm2 to 14.8 mA/cm2 and an efficiency of 2.13% was achieved. Also when In/S ratio was altered to 1.2/12, the short circuit current density increased to 17.8 mA/cm2 with an improved fill factor of 32% and efficiency remaining as 2%. Thus Cu/In and In/S ratios in the precursor solutions play a crucial role in determining the cell parameters |

Abstract: | Ultra fine nickel ferrite have been synthesized by the sol-gel method. By heat treating different portions of the prepared powder separately at different temperatures, nano-sized particles of nickel ferrite with varying particle sizes were obtained. These powders were characterised by the X-ray diffraction and then incorporated in the nitrile rubber matrix according to a specific recipe for various loadings. The cure characteristics and the mechanical properties of these rubber ferrite composites (RFCs) were evaluated. The effect of loading and the grain size of the filler on the cure characteristics and tensile properties were also evaluated. It is found that the grain size and porosity of the filler plays a vital role in determining the mechanical properties of the RFCs |

Abstract: | Rubber ferrite composites were prepared by incorporating nickel ferrite in a neoprene rubber matrix. Kinetics of the cure reaction were determined from the rheometric torque values and found to follow first-order kinetics. Analysis of the swelling behavior of the rubber ferrite composites in toluene elucidates the mechanism of solvent penetration and sorption characteristics, and reveals the extent of the physical interaction of the ferrite particles with the neoprene rubber matrix. Mechanical properties of rubber ferrite composites were determined, which support the reinforcing nature of nickel ferrite to the neoprene rubber matrix. These results show that magnetic composites with the required processing safety can be prepared economically by incorporating higher amounts of nickel ferrite in the neoprene rubber matrix |

Abstract: | The carrier transport mechanism of polyaniline (PA) thin films prepared by radio frequency plasma polymerization is described in this paper. The mechanism of electrical conduction and carrier mobility of PA thin films for different temperatures were examined using the aluminium–PA–aluminium (Al–PA–Al) structure. It is found that the mechanism of carrier transport in these thin films is space charge limited conduction. J –V studies on an asymmetric electrode configuration using indium tin oxide (ITO) as the base electrode and Al as the upper electrode (ITO–PA–Al structure) show a diode-like behaviour with a considerable rectification ratio |

Abstract: | Optimum conditions and experimental details for the formation of v-Fe203 from goethite have been worked out. In another method, a cheap complexing medium of starch was employed for precipitating acicular ferrous oxalate, which on decomposition in nitrogen and subsequent oxidation yielded acicular y-Fe203. On the basis of thermal decomposition in dry and moist nitrogen, DTA, XRD, GC and thermodynamic arguments, the mechanism of decomposition was elucidated. New materials obtained by doping ~'-Fe203 with 1-16 atomic percent magnesium, cobalt, nickel and copper, were synthesised and characterized |

Abstract: | Electrically conductive organic and metalloorganic polymers are of great interest and they have applications in electronic, optical, photonic, photoelectric, electrochemical, and dielectric devices. Tetrameric cobalt phthalocyanine was prepared by conventional chemical method. The dielectric permittivity of the tetrameric cobalt phthalocyanine sample was evaluated from the observed capacitance values in the frequency range 100 KHz to 5 MHz and in the temperature range of 300 to 383°K. It is found that the system obeys the Maxwell Wagner relaxation of space charge phenomenon. Further, from the permittivity studies AC conductivity was evaluated. The values of AC conductivity and DC conductivity were compared. Activation energy was calculated. To understand the conduction mechanism Mott’s variable range hopping model was applied to the system. The T 1/4 behavior of the DC conductivity along with the values of Mott’s Temperature (T0), density of states at the Fermi energy N (EF), and range of hopping R and hopping energy W indicate that the transport of charge carriers are by three-dimensional variable range hopping |

Abstract: | Rubber ferrite composites (RFCs) containing powdered nickel zinc ferrite (Ni1 – xZnxFe2O4 ) in a natural rubber matrix have been prepared and their mechanical and dielectric properties have been evaluated. Variations in the relative permittivity of both the ferrite ceramics and RFCs have been studied over a range of frequencies, ceramic compositions, ceramic ller loadings, and temperatures, and the results have been correlated. Appropriate mixture equations have been formulated to calculate the dielectric permittivity of the composite from the dielectric permittivity of its constituents. Values calculated using these equations have been compared with experimental data on relative permittivity, and the two have been found to be in good agreement. In the present investigationit was also observed that for x=0·4 and for the maximum ferrite loading, the composite sample exhibits maximum magnetisation and optimum exibility |

Abstract: | We investigate the effect of the phase difference of appliedfields on the dynamics of mutually coupledJosephsonjunctions. A phase difference between the appliedfields desynchronizes the system. It is found that though the amplitudes of the output voltage values are uncorrelated, a phase correlation is found to exist for small values of applied phase difference. The dynamics of the system is found to change from chaotic to periodic for certain values of phase difference. We report that by keeping the value of phase difference as π, the system continues to be in periodic motion for a wide range of values of system parameters. This result may find applications in devices like voltage standards, detectors, SQUIDS, etc., where chaos is least desired. |

Abstract: | The results of the investigation of the magnetic and structural properties of the alloy system Fe0.75–xSi0.25Sbx, where x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.25 synthesized by mechanical alloying followed by heat treatment are described. The x-ray diffraction reveals that all samples crystallize in the DO3-type cubic phase structure. Substituting Fe by Sb led to a de-crease in the lattice constant and the unit cell volume. The magnetic properties are investigated by vibrating sample magnetometer and show that all the samples are ferromagnetically ordered at room temperature. The Curie temperature is found to decrease linearly from (850 ± 5) K for the parent alloy to (620 ± 5) K for the alloyith x = 0.25. The satura-tion magnetizations at room temperature and at 100 K are found to decrease with increasing the antimony concentration. The above results indicate that Sb dissolves in the cubic structure of this alloy system. |
