Abstract: | All the exciting work on developing new and better alloys has led older alloys, such as AZ9l , being abandoned by researchers. lt is believed that the full potential of AZ9l in automotive design has not been realized. Whatever works have been carried out on AZ9lalloy to improve its mechanical properties are insufficient in terms of its potential usage in auto industries. Due to the fact that AZ91 offers high room temperature mechanical properties and good castability, still this alloy is a primary choice for the auto component manufactures. Small improvement in its creep properties will have a huge impact in the transportation industries. Hence, in the present work, “Influence of Si, Sb and Sr Additions on the Microstructure, Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Behavior of AZ91 Magnesium Alloy”, an attempt has been made to improve the creep properties of AZ9l alloy through minor alloying elemental additions and to understand its strengthening mechanisms. The effect of alloying additions on the ageing and tensile properties of AZ9l is also studied. In addition to that, role of various intermetallics formed due to the alloying additions on the corrosion properties of AZ9l alloy is investigated. |

Abstract: | The wealth of information available freely on the web and medical image databases poses a major problem for the end users: how to find the information needed? Content –Based Image Retrieval is the obvious solution.A standard called MPEG-7 was evolved to address the interoperability issues of content-based search.The work presented in this thesis mainly concentrates on developing new shape descriptors and a framework for content – based retrieval of scoliosis images.New region-based and contour based shape descriptor is developed based on orthogonal Legendre polymomials.A novel system for indexing and retrieval of digital spine radiographs with scoliosis is presented. |

Abstract: | This research project explores the utilization of cardanol in various capacities for rubber processing. Cardanol is a phenol with a long side chain in the meta position of the benzene ring. It is obtained by the vacuum distillation of cashew Hut shell liquid (CNSL) which is a cheap agro-byproduct. In this study, the plasticizer property of cardanol was investigated in silica filled and HAF black filled NR, NBR, EPDM and CR by comparing cure characteristics and mechanical properties of vulcanizates containing conventional plasticizer with those containing cardanol as plasticizer. The co-activator, antioxidant and accelerator properties were investigated in gum samples of NR, NBR, EPDM and CR by comparing the properties of vulcanizates which contain conventional co-activator, antioxidant and accelerator with those in which each of them was replaced by cardanol. The general effectiveness of cardanol was investigated by determination of cure time , measurement of physical and mechanical properties, ageing studies, crosslink density, extractability, FTIR spectra, TGA etc.The results show that cardanol can be a substitute for aromatic oil in both silica filled and HAF black filled NR. Again, it can replace dioctyl phthalate in both silica filled and HAF black filled NBR. Similarly, cardanol Can replace naphthenic oil in silica filled as well as HAF black filled EPDM and CR. The cure characteristics and mechanical properties are comparable in all the eight cases. The co-activator property of cardanol is comparable to stearic acid in all the four rubbers. The cure characteristics and mechanical properties in this case are also comparable. The antioxidant ,property of cardanol is comparable to TQ in all the four rubbers. The antioxidant property of cardanol is comparable to TQ in all the four case of NBR and EPDM.The accelerator property of cardarlol is comparable with CBS in the case of NBR and EPDM. No accelerator property is observed in the case of NR. The accelerator property of cardanol in CR is not negligible when compared with TMTD. |

Abstract: | Photothermal spectroscopy is a group of high sensitivity methods used to measure optical absorption and thermal characteristics of a sample.The basis of photothermal spectroscopy is a photo-induced change in the thermal state of the sample.Light energy absorbed and not lost by subsequent emission results in sample heating.This heating results in a temperature change as well as changes in thermodynamic parameters of the sample which are related to temperature.Measurements of the temperature,pressure,or density changes that occur due to optical absorption are ultimately the basis for the photothermal spectroscopic methods.This is a more direct measure of optical absorption than optical transmission based spectroscopies.Sample heating is a direct consequence of optical absorption and so photothermal spectroscopy signals are directly dependent on light absorption.Scattering and reflection losses do not produce photothermal signals.Subsequently,photothermal spectroscopy more accurately measures optical absorption in scattering solutions,in solids,and at interfaces.This aspect makes it particularly attractive for application to surface and solid absorption studies,and studies in scattering media. |

Abstract: | The spectral and nonlinear optical characteristics of nano ZnO and its composites are investigated. The fluorescence behaviour of nano colloids of ZnO has been studied as a function of the excitation wavelength and there is a red shift in emission peak with excitation wavelength. Apart from the observation of the reported ultra violet and green emissions, our results reveal that additional blue emissions at 420 nm and 490 nm are developed with increasing particle size. Systematic studies on nano ZnO have indicated the presence of luminescence due to excitonic emissions when excited with 255 nm as well as significant contribution from surface defect states when excited with 325 nm. In the weak confinement regime, the third-order optical susceptibility χ(3) increases with increasing particle size (R) and annealing temperature (T) and a R2 and T2.5 dependence of χ(3) is obtained for nano ZnO. ZnO nanocolloids exhibit induced absorption whereas the self assembled films of ZnO exhibit saturable absorption due to saturation of linear absorption of ZnO defect states and electronic effects. ZnO nanocomposites exhibit negative nonlinear index of refraction which can be attributed to two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absorption. The increase of the third-order nonlinearity in the composites can be attributed to the enhancement of exciton oscillator strength. The nonlinear response of ZnO nanocomposites is wavelength dependent and switching from induced absorption to saturable absorption has been observed at resonant wavelengths. Such a change-over is related to the interplay of plasmon/exciton band bleach and optical limiting mechanisms. This study is important in identifying the spectral range and the composition over which the nonlinear material acts as an optical limiter. ZnO based nanocomposites are potential materials for enhanced and tunable light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small optical limiting threshold. |

Abstract: | Warships are generally sleek, slender with V shaped sections and block coefficient below 0.5, compared to fuller forms and higher values for commercial ships. They normally operate in the higher Froude number regime, and the hydrodynamic design is primarily aimed at achieving higher speeds with the minimum power. Therefore the structural design and analysis methods are different from those for commercial ships. Certain design guidelines have been given in documents like Naval Engineering Standards and one of the new developments in this regard is the introduction of classification society rules for the design of warships.The marine environment imposes subjective and objective uncertainties on ship structure. The uncertainties in loads, material properties etc.,. make reliable predictions of ship structural response a difficult task. Strength, stiffness and durability criteria for warship structures can be established by investigations on elastic analysis, ultimate strength analysis and reliability analysis. For analysis of complicated warship structures, special means and valid approximations are required.Preliminary structural design of a frigate size ship has been carried out . A finite element model of the hold model, representative of the complexities in the geometric configuration has been created using the finite element software NISA. Two other models representing the geometry to a limited extent also have been created —- one with two transverse frames and the attached plating alongwith the longitudinal members and the other representing the plating and longitudinal stiffeners between two transverse frames. Linear static analysis of the three models have been carried out and each one with three different boundary conditions. The structural responses have been checked for deflections and stresses against the permissible values. The structure has been found adequate in all the cases. The stresses and deflections predicted by the frame model are comparable with those of the hold model. But no such comparison has been realized for the interstiffener plating model with the other two models.Progressive collapse analyses of the models have been conducted for the three boundary conditions, considering geometric nonlinearity and then combined geometric and material nonlinearity for the hold and the frame models. von Mises — lllyushin yield criteria with elastic-perfectly plastic stress-strain curve has been chosen. ln each case, P-Delta curves have been generated and the ultimate load causing failure (ultimate load factor) has been identified as a multiple of the design load specified by NES.Reliability analysis of the hull module under combined geometric and material nonlinearities have been conducted. The Young's Modulus and the shell thickness have been chosen as the variables. Randomly generated values have been used in the analysis. First Order Second Moment has been used to predict the reliability index and thereafter, the probability of failure. The values have been compared against standard values published in literature. |

Abstract: | The thesis is the outcome of the exhaustive theoretical and experimental investigations performed on Printed Monopole Antennas loaded with different geometries .The work presented in this thesis describes the development of a 3D- FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) Modeller using MATLAB for the numerical computation of the radiation characteristics of the antenna. The predicted results are verified experimentally and also through simulation using Ansoft HFSS.The effect of top loading of the monopole with different geometries ,the dimensions of the loading patch and ground plane and the material parameters of the dielectric substrate upon the radiation performance of the antenna is studied in detail. Optimized Printed Monopole antennas suitable for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) applications have been developed. |

Abstract: | Internet today has become a vital part of day to day life, owing to the revolutionary changes it has brought about in various fields. Dependence on the Internet as an information highway and knowledge bank is exponentially increasing so that a going back is beyond imagination. Transfer of critical information is also being carried out through the Internet. This widespread use of the Internet coupled with the tremendous growth in e-commerce and m-commerce has created a vital need for infonnation security.Internet has also become an active field of crackers and intruders. The whole development in this area can become null and void if fool-proof security of the data is not ensured without a chance of being adulterated. It is, hence a challenge before the professional community to develop systems to ensure security of the data sent through the Internet.Stream ciphers, hash functions and message authentication codes play vital roles in providing security services like confidentiality, integrity and authentication of the data sent through the Internet. There are several ·such popular and dependable techniques, which have been in use widely, for quite a long time. This long term exposure makes them vulnerable to successful or near successful attempts for attacks. Hence it is the need of the hour to develop new algorithms with better security.Hence studies were conducted on various types of algorithms being used in this area. Focus was given to identify the properties imparting security at this stage. By making use of a perception derived from these studies, new algorithms were designed. Performances of these algorithms were then studied followed by necessary modifications to yield an improved system consisting of a new stream cipher algorithm MAJE4, a new hash code JERIM- 320 and a new message authentication code MACJER-320. Detailed analysis and comparison with the existing popular schemes were also carried out to establish the security levels.The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) I Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol is one of the most widely used security protocols in Internet. The cryptographic algorithms RC4 and HMAC have been in use for achieving security services like confidentiality and authentication in the SSL I TLS. But recent attacks on RC4 and HMAC have raised questions about the reliability of these algorithms. Hence MAJE4 and MACJER-320 have been proposed as substitutes for them. Detailed studies on the performance of these new algorithms were carried out; it has been observed that they are dependable alternatives. |

Abstract: | The present work focuses on the modification of the commonly used thermoplastics, polypropylene and polystyrene using nanosilica preparcd from a cheap source of sodium silicate. Melt compounding technique has been used for nanocomposite preparation as it is simple and suited to injection moulding. Nanosilica in a polymer matrix provide significant enhancement in strength, stiffness and impact strength. Incorporation of silica particles in a polymer also improves its thennal stability. To achieve better dispersion of fillers in polymer matrices the mixing was done at different shear rates. The enhancement in material properties indicates that at higher shear rates there is greater interaction between particles and the matrix and it depends on filler concentration and type of polymer used. N anosilica is a useful filler in thennoplastic polymers and has been applied in automotive applications, electronic appliances and consumer goods.This thesis is divided into six chapters. General introduction to the topic is described in chapter 1. Salient features of polymer nanocomposites, their synthesis, properties and applications are presented. A review of relevant literature and the scope and objectives are also mentioned in this chapter.The materials used and the vanous experimental method and techniques employed in the study are described in chapter 2. Preparation of nanocomposites by melt blending using Thenno Haake Rheocord, preparation of samples, evaluation of mechanical and thennal properties using UTM, Impact testing and characterization using DMA, TGA and DSC and morphology by SEM are described.The preparation of nanosilica from a laboratory scale to a pilot plant scale is described in chapter 3. Generation of surface modified silica, evaluation of kinetic parameters of the synthesis reaction, scale up of the reactor and modeling of the reactor are also dealt with in this chapter.The modification of the commodity thennoplastic, Polypropylene using nanosilica is described in chapter 4. Preparation of PP/silica nanocomposites, evaluation of mechanical properties, thermal and crystallization characteristics, water absorption and ageing resistance studies are also presented.The modification of Polystyrene using synthesized nanosilica IS described in chapter 5. The method of preparation of PS/silica nanocomposites, evaluation of mechanical properties (static and dynamic), thermal properties melt flow characteristics using Haake Rheocord, water absorption and ageing resistance of these nanocomposites are studied. |

Abstract: | This thesis presents analytical and numerical results from studies based on the multiple quantum well laser rate equation model. We address the problem of controlling chaos produced by direct modulation of laser diodes. We consider the delay feedback control methods for this purpose and study their performance using numerical simulation. Besides the control of chaos, control of other nonlinear effects such as quasiperiodicity and bistability using delay feedback methods are also investigated.A number of secure communication schemes based on synchronization of chaos semiconductor lasers have been successfully demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. The current investigations in these field include the study of practical issues on the implementations of such encryption schemes. We theoretically study the issues such as channel delay, phase mismatch and frequency detuning on the synchronization of chaos in directly modulated laser diodes. It would be helpful for designing and implementing chaotic encryption schemes using synchronization of chaos in modulated semiconductor lasers. |

Abstract: | Electromagnetic tomography has been applied to problems in nondestructive evolution, ground-penetrating radar, synthetic aperture radar, target identification, electrical well logging, medical imaging etc. The problem of electromagnetic tomography involves the estimation of cross sectional distribution dielectric permittivity, conductivity etc based on measurement of the scattered fields. The inverse scattering problem of electromagnetic imaging is highly non linear and ill posed, and is liable to get trapped in local minima. The iterative solution techniques employed for computing the inverse scattering problem of electromagnetic imaging are highly computation intensive. Thus the solution to electromagnetic imaging problem is beset with convergence and computational issues. The attempt of this thesis is to develop methods suitable for improving the convergence and reduce the total computations for tomographic imaging of two dimensional dielectric cylinders illuminated by TM polarized waves, where the scattering problem is defmed using scalar equations. A multi resolution frequency hopping approach was proposed as opposed to the conventional frequency hopping approach employed to image large inhomogeneous scatterers. The strategy was tested on both synthetic and experimental data and gave results that were better localized and also accelerated the iterative procedure employed for the imaging. A Degree of Symmetry formulation was introduced to locate the scatterer in the investigation domain when the scatterer cross section was circular. The investigation domain could thus be reduced which reduced the degrees of freedom of the inverse scattering process. Thus the entire measured scattered data was available for the optimization of fewer numbers of pixels. This resulted in better and more robust reconstructions of the scatterer cross sectional profile. The Degree of Symmetry formulation could also be applied to the practical problem of limited angle tomography, as in the case of a buried pipeline, where the ill posedness is much larger. The formulation was also tested using experimental data generated from an experimental setup that was designed. The experimental results confirmed the practical applicability of the formulation. |

Abstract: | The thesis focuses on efficient design methods and reconfiguration architectures suitable for higher performance wireless communication .The work presented in this thesis describes the development of compact,inexpensive and low power communication devices that are robust,testable and capable of handling multiple communication standards.A new multistandard Decimation Filter Design Toolbox is developed in MATLAB GUIDE environment.RNS based dual-mode decimation filters reconfigurable for WCDMA/WiMAX and WCDMA/WLANa standards are designed and implemented.It offers high speed operation with lesser area requirement and lower dynamic power dissipation.A novel sigma-delta based direct analog-to-residue converter that reduces the complexity of RNS conversion circuitry is presented.The performance of an OFDM communication system with a new RRNS-convolutional concatenated coding is analysed and improved BER performance is obtained under different channel conditions. Easily testable MAC units for filters are presented using Reed-Muller logic for realization. |

Abstract: | Laser induced plasma (LIP) emissions from some metal oxide targets were studied with corresponding metal targets of pure quality as a reference. Atomic emissions in the visible region were used in the spectroscopic procedures of LIP characterization. The studies were meant to throw light into LIP dynamics and they provided many experimental results which improved the general awareness of plasma state.When target materials were photo-ablated with an energetically suitable laser pulse, they developed electric charges in them.An electrical signal which was delivered from the target served as an alternative probe signal for the diagnostics of LIP and to track different charged states in the plasma. The signal showed a double peak distribution with positive polarity and a modified time of flight with various voltage levels of a given polarity.The expansion dynamics of LIP in magnetic field were also investigated by monitoring the voltage transients generated at the target. |

Abstract: | ACCURATE sensing of vehicle position and attitude is still a very challenging problem in many mobile robot applications. The mobile robot vehicle applications must have some means of estimating where they are and in which direction they are heading. Many existing indoor positioning systems are limited in workspace and robustness because they require clear lines-of-sight or do not provide absolute, driftfree measurements.The research work presented in this dissertation provides a new approach to position and attitude sensing system designed specifically to meet the challenges of operation in a realistic, cluttered indoor environment, such as that of an office building, hospital, industrial or warehouse. This is accomplished by an innovative assembly of infrared LED source that restricts the spreading of the light intensity distribution confined to a sheet of light and is encoded with localization and traffic information. This Digital Infrared Sheet of Light Beacon (DISLiB) developed for mobile robot is a high resolution absolute localization system which is simple, fast, accurate and robust, without much of computational burden or significant processing. Most of the available beacon's performance in corridors and narrow passages are not satisfactory, whereas the performance of DISLiB is very encouraging in such situations. This research overcomes most of the inherent limitations of existing systems.The work further examines the odometric localization errors caused by over count readings of an optical encoder based odometric system in a mobile robot due to wheel-slippage and terrain irregularities. A simple and efficient method is investigated and realized using an FPGA for reducing the errors. The detection and correction is based on redundant encoder measurements. The method suggested relies on the fact that the wheel slippage or terrain irregularities cause more count readings from the encoder than what corresponds to the actual distance travelled by the vehicle.The application of encoded Digital Infrared Sheet of Light Beacon (DISLiB) system can be extended to intelligent control of the public transportation system. The system is capable of receiving traffic status input through a GSM (Global System Mobile) modem. The vehicles have infrared receivers and processors capable of decoding the information, and generating the audio and video messages to assist the driver. The thesis further examines the usefulness of the technique to assist the movement of differently-able (blind) persons in indoor or outdoor premises of his residence.The work addressed in this thesis suggests a new way forward in the development of autonomous robotics and guidance systems. However, this work can be easily extended to many other challenging domains, as well. |

Abstract: | This thesis Entitled Internet Utilization and Academic Activities of Faculty Members in the Universities of kerala: an analytical study. Today, scientific research is throwing up new discoveries, inventions and vistas by the hour. We are witnessing a veritable knowledge explosion. It is important for members of university faculty members to keep abreast of it for giving up-t-date information to their students about the new development in the subject of their study. The internet is an invaluable tool for achieving it. Most of the universities have sufficient internet facility, but the accessibility to all the faculty members is not adequate. University Libraries also provides standard supplementary service in the internet area. This study indicates differential level of awareness and utilization of the internet services by the faculty members in the areas of teaching, research and publication. However the overall impression is that the awareness and utilization is inadequate. This point to the urgent need to devise programs and schemes to promote internet utilization among the faculty members. The suggestions indicate the key areas that deserve attention by policy makers and administrators. Thanks to the internet, every new development in every field of study is just a click away for faculty members, research scholars and students. |
