Abstract:
The mechanical properties of filled natural rubber latex vulcanizates were found to be improved by the
addition of polyethylene glycols of different molecular weight and glycerol. There is a slight reduction
in the optimum cure times of the compounds containing PEG/Glycerol. The morphology study shows
that the filler distribution is more uniform in the compounds containing PEG/Glycerol.

Abstract:
Oceans play a vital role in the global climate system. They absorb the incoming solar energy and redistribute the energy through horizontal and vertical transports. In this context it is important to investigate the variation of heat budget components during the formation of a low-pressure system. In 2007, the monsoon onset was on 28th May. A well- marked low-pressure area was formed in the eastern Arabian Sea after the onset and it further developed into a cyclone. We have analysed the heat budget components during different stages of the cyclone. The data used for the computation of heat budget components is Objectively Analyzed air-sea flux data obtained from WHOI (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) project. Its horizontal resolution is 1° × 1°. Over the low-pressure area, the latent heat flux was 180 Wm−2. It increased to a maximum value of 210 Wm−2 on 1st June 2007, on which the system was intensified into a cyclone (Gonu) with latent heat flux values ranging from 200 to 250 Wm−2. It sharply decreased after the passage of cyclone. The high value of latent heat flux is attributed to the latent heat release due to the cyclone by the formation of clouds. Long wave radiation flux is decreased sharply from 100 Wm−2 to 30 Wm−2 when the low-pressure system intensified into a cyclone. The decrease in long wave radiation flux is due to the presence of clouds. Net heat flux also decreases sharply to −200 Wm−2 on 1st June 2007. After the passage, the flux value increased to normal value (150 Wm−2) within one day. A sharp increase in the sensible heat flux value (20 Wm−2) is observed on 1st June 2007 and it decreased there- after. Short wave radiation flux decreased from 300 Wm−2 to 90 Wm−2 during the intensification on 1st June 2007. Over this region, short wave radiation flux sharply increased to higher value soon after the passage of the cyclone.

Abstract:
The method of preparation of ZnS phosphors doped with praseodymium and copper is given. The electroluminescence (EL) spectrum of ZnS:Pr,Cl has two broad bands at 470 and 570 nm. ZnS:Cu,Pr,Cl gives white emission with spectral peaks at 470, 520, 570 and 640 nm. The EL spectra of both types of phosphor exhibit a conspicuous colour shift as the frequency of the excitation voltage is varied. Detailed investigations show that the relative intensities of spectral peaks are strongly dependent on the frequency of the excitation voltage. The colour shift is explained on the basis of the Schon-Klasens model.

A sensitive method based on the principle of photothermal phenomena to study the energy transfer processes in organic dye mixtures is presented. A dual beam thermal lens method can be very effectively used as an alternate technique to determine the molecular distance between donor and acceptor in fluorescein–rhodamine B mixture using optical parametric oscillator.

Abstract:
Mechanical properties and thermal degradation of natural rubber compounds
containing castor oil were studied to evaluate its suitability as plasticizer.
Naphthenic oil was used as a reference plasticizer. The cure time was marginally
lower in the case of castor oil mixes, probably due to the presence offree fatty acids
in it. The tear strength and modulus were better in the case of mixes containing
castor oil, while most of the other mechanical properties were comparable to
the mixes containing naphthenic oil. The heat build up and compression set were
higher than that of the naphthenic oil mixes. Thermal studies showed an increase
of 8 °C in the temperature of initiation of degradation and an increase of 6 °C in
the temperature at which the peak rate of degradation occurred. The peak rate
of degradation was comparable to that of the reference compound
Mechanical properties and thermal degradation characteristics of natural rubber compounds
captaining coconut oil were compared with that of a control compound containing naphthenic oil.
Cure time was marginally lower in the case of coconut oil mixes, probably due to the presence of
free fatty acids. Tensile strength , tear strength, resilience and abrasion resistance were better than
the naphthenic oil-based compounds . Compression set and hardness were marginally inferior
The coconut oil mixes had a crosslink density comparable to that of the reference compound.
Thermal studies showed that the temperature of initiation of degradation was increased by 10°C
and the temperature at which the peak rate of degradation occured was increased by 7°C. The
peak rate of degradation was compa rable to the control compound.

Abstract:
Cure characteristics and mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber
reclaimed rubber blends were studied. The blends showed improved processability,
as indicated by the minimum torque values. Cure characteristics like minimum
torque, (maximum-minimum) torque, cure time and cure rate decreased in the
presence of reclaimed rubber. Tensile strength, tear strength, elongation at break
were higher for blends. Resilience decreased with reclaim content. Compression set
and abrasion loss were higher in the blends.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a content based image retrieval (CBIR) system using the local colour and texture features of selected image sub-blocks and global colour and shape features of the image. The image sub-blocks are roughly identified by segmenting the image into partitions of different configuration, finding the edge density in each partition using edge thresholding, morphological dilation. The colour and texture features of the identified regions are computed from the histograms of the quantized HSV colour space and Gray Level Co- occurrence Matrix (GLCM) respectively. A combined colour and texture feature vector is computed for each region. The shape features are computed from the Edge Histogram Descriptor (EHD). A modified Integrated Region Matching (IRM) algorithm is used for finding the minimum distance between the sub-blocks of the query and target image. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides better retrieving result than retrieval using some of the existing methods

Abstract:
Titania, sulfated titania and chromium loaded sulfated titania were prepared by sol–gel method and characterized using different technique. Phenol is nitrated regioselectively by nitric acid using chromium loaded sulfated titania catalysts. A remarkable ortho selectivity is observed in solid state nitration to yield exclusively ortho-nitrophenol. Compared to the conventional process, phenol nitration over solid acid catalyst is a clean and environment friendly process. Catalytic activity well correlates with the Brönsted acid sites of these catalysts.

Abstract:
Hypoxia is one of the major causes of damage to the fetal and neonatal brain and cardiac functions. in earlier studies we have reported the brain damage caused by hypoxia and resusciation with oxygen and epinephrine and have found that glucose treatment to hypoxic rats and hypoxic rats treated with oxygen shows a reversal of brain damage. during this study the findings may have clinical significance in the proper management of heart and brain functions.

Abstract:
The effect of coupling on two high frequency modulated semiconductor lasers is numerically studied. The phase diagrams and bifurcatio.n diagrams are drawn. As the coupling constant is increased the system goes from chaotic to periodic behavior through a reverse period doubling sequence. The Lyapunov exponent is calculated to characterize chaotic and periodic regions.

Abstract:
The incorporation of transition metal oxide pillars such as those of iron and chromium along with Al2O3, pillars within
the interlayers of a montmorillonite clay is investigated. The surface acidity of these catalysts has been evaluated for the first
time employing the equilibrium adsorption of an electron donor, perylene, and the results are compared with those obtained
by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. The principle is based on the ability of a catalyst surface site to accept
a single electron from an electron donor like perylene to form charge transfer complexes and the amount of adsorbed species
is measured quantitatively by UV-vis spectroscopy. Fina1ly, an attempt has been made to correlate the acidity determined by
the two independcnt methods and the catalytic activity of present systems in the benzoylation of toluene with benzoyl
chloride. Incorporation of Fe and Cr has changed the properties of AI pitlared montmorillonite. Fe pillared systems have
been found to be vcry good catalysts for benzoylation reaction

Abstract:
We have investigated the changes in surface acidity/basicity
and catalytic pro~erties of samarium oxide due to surface modification
by SO42- ion. The acidity/basicity of the catalysts is
determined by titration method using Hammett indicators.
Esterification of acetic acid by n-butanol is chosen as a test
reaction. Sm203, owing to its high basicity and low acidity, does
not catalyze the reaction. But sulphated Sm20J catalyzes the
esterification reaction effectively. Activation temperature does
not have much effect on the acidity of sulphated samaria.
