Abstract: | The results of the investigation of the magnetic and structural properties of the alloy system Fe0.75–xSi0.25Sbx, where x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.25 synthesized by mechanical alloying followed by heat treatment are described. The x-ray diffraction reveals that all samples crystallize in the DO3-type cubic phase structure. Substituting Fe by Sb led to a de-crease in the lattice constant and the unit cell volume. The magnetic properties are investigated by vibrating sample magnetometer and show that all the samples are ferromagnetically ordered at room temperature. The Curie temperature is found to decrease linearly from (850 ± 5) K for the parent alloy to (620 ± 5) K for the alloyith x = 0.25. The satura-tion magnetizations at room temperature and at 100 K are found to decrease with increasing the antimony concentration. The above results indicate that Sb dissolves in the cubic structure of this alloy system. |

Abstract: | Fine particles of barium ferrite (BaFe12O19) were synthesized by the conventional ceramic technique. These materials were then characterized by the X-ray diffraction method and incorporated in the natural rubber matrix according to a specific receipe for various loadings of ferrite. The rubber ferrite composites (RFC) thus obtained have several applications, and have the advantage of molding into complex shapes. For applications such as microwave absorbers, these composites should have an appropriate dielectric strength with the required mechanical and magnetic properties. The N330 (HAF) carbon black has been added to these RFCs for various loadings to modify the dielectric and mechanical properties. In this article we report the effect of carbon black on the mechanical and dielectric properties of these RFCs. Both the mechanical and dielectric properties can be enhanced by the addition of an appropriate amount of carbon black |

Abstract: | Superparamagnetic nanocomposites based on g-Fe2O3 and sulphonated polystyrene have been synthesized by ion exchange process and the preparation conditions were optimized. Samples were subjected to cycling to study the effect of cycling on the magnetic properties of these composites. The structural and magnetization studies have been carried out. Magnetization studies show the dependence of magnetization on the number of ion exchange cycles. Doping of cobalt at the range in to the g-Fe2O3 lattice was effected in situ and the doping was varied in the atomic percentage range 1–10. The exact amount of cobalt dopant as well as the iron content was estimated by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The effect of cobalt in modifying the properties of the composites was then studied and the results indicate that the coercivity can be tuned by the amount of cobalt in the composites. The tuning of both the magnetization and the coercivity can be achieved by a combination of cycling of ion exchange and the incorporation of cobalt |

Abstract: | Nanosized ZnFe2O4 particles containing traces of a-Fe2O3 by intent were produced by low temperature chemical coprecipitation methods. These particles were subjected to high-energy ball milling. These were then characterised using X-ray diffraction, magnetisation and dielectric studies. The effect of milling on zinc ferrite particles have been studied with a view to ascertaining the anomalous behaviour of these materials in the nanoregime. X-ray diffraction and magnetisation studies carried out show that these particles are associated with strains and it is the surface effects that contribute to the magnetisation. Hematite percentage, probably due to decomposition of zinc ferrite, increases with milling. Dielectric behaviour of these particles is due to interfacial polarisation as proposed by Koops. Also the defects caused by the milling produce traps in the surface layer contributes to dielectric permittivity via spin polarised electron tunnelling between grains. The ionic mechanism is enhanced in dielectrics with the rise in temperature which results in the increase of dielectric permittivity with temperature. |

Abstract: | Nickel–rubber nanocomposites were synthesized by incorporating ferromagnetic nickel nanoparticles in a natural rubber as well as neoprene rubber matrix. Complex dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability of these composites were evaluated in the X-band microwave frequencies at room temperature using cavity perturbation technique. The dielectric loss in natural rubber is smaller compared to neoprene rubber. A steady increase in the dielectric permittivity is observed with increase in the content of nickel in both the composites. The magnetic permeability exhibits a steady decrease with increase in frequency and magnetic loss shows a relaxation at 8 GHz. The suitability of these composites as microwave absorbers is modeled based on the reflection loss which is dependant on the real and imaginary components of the complex dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. |

Abstract: | Mixed ferrites belonging to the type Mn0.9Zn0.1Fe2O4 have been prepared by the double sintering method and by the chemical co-precipitation for comparing their magnetic properties. Sintered and precipitated ferrites exhibit different characteristics, especially in their magnetic properties like magnetization (Ms), coercive field (Hc) and Curie temperature (Tc). The sintered particles were size reduced in order to compare with the nanosized co-precipitated particles. The effect of grinding has also been studied. Particles have been collected at regular intervals of grinding and their properties have been studied. The increase in the coercive field has been recorded by a hysteresis curve tracer confirming size reduction. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the structure and consequent size reduction |

Abstract: | Magnetic properties of nano-crystalline soft magnetic alloys have usually been correlated to structural evolution with heat treatment. However, literature reports pertaining to the study of nano-crystalline thin films are less abundant. Thin films of Fe40Ni38B18Mo4 were deposited on glass substrates under a high vacuum of ≈ 10−6 Torr by employing resistive heating. They were annealed at various temperatures ranging from 373 to 773K based on differential scanning calorimetric studies carried out on the ribbons. The magnetic characteristics were investigated using vibrating sample magnetometry. Morphological characterizations were carried out using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) imaging is used to study the domain characteristics. The variation of magnetic properties with thermal annealing is also investigated. From AFM and MFM images it can be inferred that the crystallization temperature of the as-prepared films are lower than their bulk counterparts. Also there is a progressive evolution of coercivity up to 573 K, which is an indication of the lowering of nano-crystallization temperature in thin films. The variation of coercivity with the structural evolution of the thin films with annealing is discussed and a plausible explanation is provided using the modified random anisotropy model |

Abstract: | Ferrofluids belonging to the series NixFe1 xFe2O4 were synthesised by two different procedures—one by standard co-precipitation techniques, the other by co-precipitation for synthesis of particles and dispersion aided by high-energy ball milling with a view to understand the effect of strain and size anisotropy on the magneto-optical properties of ferrofluids. The birefringence measurements were carried out using a standard ellipsometer. The birefringence signal obtained for chemically synthesised samples was satisfactorily fitted to the standard second Langevin function. The ball-milled ferrofluids showed a deviation and their birefringence was enhanced by an order. This large enhancement in the birefringence value cannot be attributed to the increase in grain size of the samples, considering that the grain sizes of sample synthesised by both modes are comparable; instead, it can be attributed to the lattice strain-induced shape anisotropy(oblation) arising from the high-energy ball-milling process. Thus magnetic-optical (MO) signals can be tuned by ball-milling process, which can find potential applications |

Abstract: | The effect of frequency, composition and temperature on the a.c. electrical conductivity were studied for the ceramic, Ni1–xZnxFe2O4, as well as the filler (Ni1–xZnxFe2O4) incorporated rubber ferrite composites (RFCs). Ni1–xZnxFe2O4 (where x varies from 0 to 1 in steps of 0×2) were prepared by usual ceramic techniques. They were then incorporated into a butyl rubber matrix according to a specific recipe. The a.c. electrical conductivity (sa.c.) calculations were carried out by using the data available from dielectric measurements and by employing a simple relationship. The a.c. conductivity values were found to be of the order of 10–3 S/m. Analysis of the results shows that sa.c. increases with increase of frequency and the change is same for both ceramic Ni1–xZnxFe2O4 and RFCs. sa.c. increases initially with the increase of zinc content and then decreases with increase of zinc. Same behaviour is observed for RFCs too. The dependence of sa.c. on the volume fraction of the magnetic filler was also studied and it was found that the a.c. conductivity of RFCs increases with increase of volume fraction of the magnetic filler. Temperature dependence of conductivity was studied for both ceramic and rubber ferrite composites. Conductivity shows a linear dependence with temperature in the case of ceramic samples |

Abstract: | Superparamagnetic nanocomposites based on Y-Fe2O3 and sulphonated polystyrene were synthesised by ion-exchange process and the structural characterisation has been carried out using X-ray diffraction technique. Doping of cobalt in to the Y-Fe2O3 lattice was effected in situ and the doping was varied in the atomic percentage range 1–10. The optical absorption studies show a band gap of 2.84 eV, which is blue shifted by 0.64 eV when compared to the reported values for the bulk samples (2.2 eV). This is explained on the basis of weak quantum confinement. Further size reduction can result in a strong confinement, which can yield transparent magnetic nanocomposites because of further blue shifting. The band gap gets red shifted further with the addition of cobalt in the lattice and this red shift increases with the increase in doping. The observed red shift can be attributed to the strain in the lattice caused by the anisotropy induced by the addition of cobalt. Thus, tuning of bandgap and blue shifting is aided by weak exciton confinement and further red shifting of the bandgap is assisted by cobalt doping. |

Abstract: | Nanoparticles are of immense importance both from the fundamental and application points of view. They exhibit quantum size effects which are manifested in their improved magnetic and electric properties. Mechanical attrition by high energy ball milling (HEBM) is a top down process for producing fine particles. However, fineness is associated with high surface area and hence is prone to oxidation which has a detrimental effect on the useful properties of these materials. Passivation of nanoparticles is known to inhibit surface oxidation. At the same time, coating polymer film on inorganic materials modifies the surface properties drastically. In this work a modified set-up consisting of an RF plasma polymerization technique is employed to coat a thin layer of a polymer film on Fe nanoparticles produced by HEBM. Ball-milled particles having different particle size ranges are coated with polyaniline. Their electrical properties are investigated by measuring the dc conductivity in the temperature range 10–300 K. The low temperature dc conductivity (I–V ) exhibited nonlinearity. This nonlinearity observed is explained on the basis of the critical path model. There is clear-cut evidence for the occurrence of intergranular tunnelling. The results are presented here in this paper |

Abstract: | Nanoparticles of manganese ferrite were prepared by the chemical co-precipitation technique. The dielectric parameters, namely, real and imaginary dielectric permittivity (ε and ε ), ac conductivity (σac) and dielectric loss tangent (tan δ), were measured in the frequency range of 100 kHz–8MHz at different temperatures. The variations of dielectric dispersion (ε ) and dielectric absorption (ε ) with frequency and temperature were also investigated. The variation of dielectric permittivity with frequency and temperature followed the Maxwell–Wagner model based on interfacial polarization in consonance with Koops phenomenological theory. The dielectric loss tangent and hence ε exhibited a relaxation at certain frequencies and at relatively higher temperatures. The dispersion of dielectric permittivity and broadening of the dielectric absorption suggest the possibility of a distribution of relaxation time and the existence of multiple equilibrium states in manganese ferrite. The activation energy estimated from the dielectric relaxation is found to be high and is characteristic of polaron conduction in the nanosized manganese ferrite. The ac conductivity followed a power law dependence σac = Bωn typical of charge transport assisted by a hopping or tunnelling process. The observed minimum in the temperature dependence of the frequency exponent n strongly suggests that tunnelling of the large polarons is the dominant transport process |

Abstract: | In any investigation, information about the molecules under consideration is very essential for tailoring their properties. Evaluation of dispersion parameters, namely optical dielectric constant, static dielectric constant, relaxation time and spreading factor, assumes significance in this context. Dielectric spectroscopy is a useful tool for estimating these parameters. Not only does it reveal details about these constants but it also gives insight into the mechanism of conduction. In this paper the evaluation of dispersion parameters of cobalt phthalocyanine tetramer in the temperature range 300–393K is attempted using Cole–Cole plots. The temperature variation of the spreading factor indicates the existence of multiple equilibrium positions in the case of cobalt phthalocyanine tetramer. To the best of our knowledge, the evaluation of dispersion parameters for cobalt phthalocyanine tetramer is reported for the first time |

Abstract: | Ultra thin films based on CoFe were prepared from a composite target employing thermal evaporation. The microstructure of the films was modified by thermal annealing. The relationship between microstructure and magnetic properties of the films was investigated using techniques like glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The GXRD and TEM investigations showed an onset of crystallization of CoFe at around 373 K. The magnetic softness of the films improved with thermal annealing but at higher annealing temperature it is found to be deteriorating. Annealing inducedmodification of surface morphology of the alloy thin filmswas probed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface smoothening was observed with thermal annealing and the observed magnetic properties correlate well with surface modifications induced by thermal annealing |

Abstract: | The magnetic properties of amorphous Fe–Ni–B based metallic glass nanostructures were investigated. The nanostructures underwent a spin-glass transition at temperatures below 100 K and revealed an irreversible temperature following the linear de Almeida–Thouless dependence. When the nanostructures were cooled below 25 K in a magnetic field, they exhibited an exchange bias effect with enhanced coercivity. The observed onset of exchange bias is associated with the coexistence of the spin-glass phase along with the appearance of another spin-glass phase formed by oxidation of the structurally disordered surface layer, displaying a distinct training effect and cooling field dependence. The latter showed a maximum in exchange bias field and coercivity, which is probably due to competing multiple equivalent spin configurations at the boundary between the two spin-glass phases |

Abstract: | Two-dimensional electronic systems play a crucial role in modern electronics and offer a multitude of opportunities to study the fundamental phenomena at low dimensional physics. A quantum well heterostructure based on polyaniline (P) and iodine doped polyaniline (I) thin films were fabricated using radio frequency plasma polymerization on indium tin oxide coated glass plate. Scanning probe microscopy and scanning electron microscopy studies were employed to study the morphology and roughness of the polymer thin films. Local electronic density of states (LDOS) of the P–I–P heterostructures is probed using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS). A step like LDOS is observed in the P–I–P heterostructure and is attributed to the quantum well confinement of electrons in the polymer heterostructure. |

Abstract: | Ferrofluids belonging to the series, Ni x Fe1-x Fe2O4 and Zn x Fe1-x Fe2O4, were synthesized using cold co-precipitation. Liquid films of these ferrofluids were prepared by encapsulating the ferrofluids in between two optically smooth and ultrasonically cleaned glass plates. Magnetic field induced laser transmission through these ferrofluid films has been investigated. Magnetic field values can be calibrated in terms of output laser power in the low field region in which the variation is linear. This set up can be used as a cheap optical gaussmeter in the low field regime. Using the same set-up, the saturation magnetization of the sample used can also be calculated with a sample that is pre-characterized. Hence both magnetization of the sample, as well as applied magnetic field can be sensed and calculated with a precalibrated sample. |

Abstract: | Fine particles of cobalt ferrite were synthesized by the sol–gel method. Subsequent heat treatment at different temperatures yielded cobalt ferrites having different grain sizes. X-ray diffraction studies were carried out to elucidate the structure of all the samples. Dielectric permittivity and ac conductivity of all the samples were evaluated as a function of frequency, temperature and grain size. The variation of permittivity and ac conductivity with frequency reveals that the dispersion is due to Maxwell–Wagner type interfacial polarization in general, with a noted variation from the expected behaviour for the cold synthesized samples. High permittivity and conductivity for small grains were explained on the basis of the correlated barrier-hopping model |
