Next PageAbstract: | The synthesis and reactions of simple derivatives of 2(3H)- and 3(2H)furanones have attracted considerable attention in recent years, primarily in connection with development of routes to antitumor agents that contain this ring as central structural unit. They also serve as useful synthetic building blocks for lactones and furans and are the precursors of a wide variety of biologically important heterocyclic systems. Although a number of syntheses of furanones were known they were in many cases limited to specific substitution pattems. The development of altemative strategies for the preparation of these heterocycles is therefore of considerable importance or continues to be a challenge. We propose to develop new and general approaches to the synthesis of furanone ring systems from simple and readily available starting materials since we were interested in examining their rich photochemistry. The photochemical reactivity of Beta,gama-unsaturated lactams and lactones is a subject of current interest. Some of the prominent photoreaction pathways of unsaturated lactones include decarbonylation, solvent addition to double bonds, decarboxylation, migration of aryl substituents and dimerisation. lt was reported earlier that the critical requirement for clean photochemical cleavage of the acyl-oxygen bond is the presence ofa double bond adjacent to the ether oxygen and 2(3H)-furanones possessing this structural requirement undergo facile decarbonylation. But related phenanthrofuranones are isolated as photostable end products upon irradiation. Hence we propose to synthesis a few phenanthro-2(3H)-furanones to study the effect of a radical stabilising group at 3-position of furanone ring on photolysis. To explore the tripletmediated transformations of 2(3H)-furanones in polar and nonpolar solvents a few 3,3-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-5-aryl-3H-furan-2-ones and 3,3-di(p-tolyl)-5-aryl- 3H-furan-2-ones were synthesised from the corresponding dibenzoylstyrene precursors by neat thermolysis. Our aim was to study the nature of intermediates involved in these transformations. We also explored the possibility of developing a new and general approach to the synthesis of 3(2H)-furanones from simple and readily available starting materials since such general procedures are not available. The protocol developed by us employs readily available phenanthrenequinone and various 4-substituted acetophenones as starting materials and provides easy access to the required 3(2H)-furanone targets. These furanone derivatives have immense potential for further investigations .We also aimed the synthesis of a few dibenzoylalkene-type systems such as acenaphthenone-2—ylidene ketones and phenanthrenone-9-ylidene ketones. These systems were expected to undergo thermal rearrangement to give furanones and spirofuranones. Also these systems can be categorised as quinonemethides which are valuable synthetic intermediates. |

Abstract: | The present thesis develops from the point of view of titania sol-gel chemistry and an attempt is made to address the modification of the process for better photoactive titania by selective doping and also demonstration of utilization of the process for the preparation of supported membranes and self cleaning films.A general introduction to nanomaterials, nanocrystalline titania and sol-gel chemistry are presented in the first chapter. A brief and updated literature review on sol-gel titania, with special emphasis on catalytic and photocatalytic properties and anatase to rutile transformation are covered. Based on critical assessment of the reported information the present research problem has been defined. The second chapter describes a new aqueous sol-gel method for the preparation of nanocrystalline titania using titanyl sulphate as precursor. This approach is novel since no earlier work has been reported in the same lines proposed here. The sol-gel process has been followed at each step using particle size, zeta potential measurements on the sol and thermal analysis of the resultant gel. The prepared powders were then characterized using X-ray diffraction, FTIR, BET surface area analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The third chapter presents a detailed discussion on the physico-chemical characterization of the aqueous sol-gel derived doped titania. The effect of dopants such as tantalum, gadolinium and ytterbium on the anatase to rutile phase transformation, surface area as well as their influence on photoactivity is also included. The fourth chapter demonstrates application of the aqueous sol-gel method in developing titania coatings on porous alumina substrates for controlling the poresize for use as membrane elements in ultrafiltration. Thin coatings having ~50 nm thickness and transparency of ~90% developed on glass surface were tested successfully for self cleaning applications. |

Abstract: | The main objective of the present study is to have a detailed investigation on the gelation properties, morphology and optical properties of small π-conjugated oligomers. For this purpose we have chosen oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s (OPVs), a class of molecules which have received considerable attention due to their unique optical and electronic properties. Though a large number of reports are available in the literature on the self-assembly properties of tailor made OPVs, none of them pertain to the design of nanostructures based on organogels. In view of this, we aimed at the creation of functional chromophoric assemblies of π-conjugated OPVs through the formation of organogels, with the objective of crafting nanoscopic assemblies of different size and shape thereby modulating their optical and electronic properties. In order to fulfill the above objectives, the design and synthesis of a variety of OPVs with appropriate structural variations were planned. The design principle involves the derivatization of OPVs with weak H-bonding hydroxymethyl end groups and with long aliphatic hydrocarbon side chains. The noncovalent interactions in these molecules were expected to lead the formation of supramolecular assembly and gels in hydrocarbon solvents. In such an event, detailed study of gelation and extensive analysis of the morphology of the gel structures were planned using advanced microscopic techniques. Since OPVs are strongly fluorescent molecules, gelation is expected to perturb the optical properties. Therefore, detailed study on the gelation induced optical properties as a way to probe the nature and stability of the selfassembly was planned. Apart from this, the potential use of the modulation of the optical properties for the purpose of light harvesting was aimed. The approach to this problem was to entrap an appropriate energy trap to the OPV gel matrix which may lead to the efficient energy transfer from the OPV gel based donor to the entrapped acceptor. The final question that we wanted to address in this investigation was the creation of helical nanostructures through proper modification of the OPV backbone With chiral handles. The present thesis is a detailed and systematic approach to the realization of the above objectives which are presented in different chapters of the thesis. |

Abstract: | Catalysis is a technologically important field which determines the quality of life in future. Catalyst research in pharmaceutical industry, fine chemical synthesis and emission control demands supported catalysts in bulk quantities. In the present work it was observed that clay supported catalysts mentioned in various chapters could also be used for the synthesis of similar molecules. The K10Ti catalyst can be used for the synthesis similar substituted imidazole derivatives under solvent free conditions and synthetically important Mannich bases of substrates containing various substitutes.Al-pillared saponite can be used for acetalation of other polyhydroxy compounds like glycerol, mannitol etc.Cu-Pd KSF catalyst has found application in C-C bond forming reactions which can be applied to other reactions and similar methods can be adopted for the synthesis of other catalyst by changing the transition metals. Montmorillonite K10 catalysed synthesis of triarylpyridines can be extended to the synthesis tetrasubstuted pyroles.K10Ti can also be utilized for the synthesis of similar heterocycles. |

Abstract: | The present work deals with the complexation of Schiff bases of aroylhydrazines with various transition metal ions. The hydrazone systems selected for study have long 7I:-delocalized chain in the ligand molecule itself, which get intensified due to metal-to-ligand or ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitations upon coordination. Complexation with metal ions like copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, iron, zinc and cadmium are tried. Various spectral techniques are employed for characterization. The structures of some complexes have been well established by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The nonIinaer optical studies of the ligands and complexes synthesized have been studied by hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique. The work is presented in seven chapters and the last one deals with summary and conclusion. One of the hydrazone system selected for study proved that it could give rise to polymeric metal complexes. Some of the copper, nickel, zinc and cadmium complexes showed non-linear optical activity. The NLO studies of manganese and iron showed negative result, may be due to the inversion centre of symmetry within the molecular lattice. |

Abstract: | Schiff base complexes of transition metal ions have played a significant role in coordination chemistry. In the present study we have synthesized some new Mn(II),Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes of Schiff bases derived from 1,8-diaminonaphthalene.Even though we could not isolate theses Schiff bases (as they readily cyclise to form the perimidine compounds),we were able to characterize unequivacally the complexes synthesized from these compounds as complexes of Schiff Bases. We Synthesized three perimidine derivatives ,2-(quinoxalin-2-yl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-perimidine,2-(2,3-dihydro-1H-perimidin-2-yl)-6-methoxyphenol and 4-(2,3-dihyro-1H-perimidin-2-yl)-2-methoxyphenol by the condensation of 1,8-diaminonaphthalene with quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde,2- hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde or 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde respectively.Theses compounds were used as precursor ligands for the preparation of Schiff base complexes. The complexes were characterized by using elemental analysis ,conductance and magnetic susceptibility measuremets ,infrared and UV-Visible spectroscopy ,thermogravimetric analysis and EPR spectroscopy .We also encapsulated the complexes in zeolite Y matrix and these encapsulated complexes were also characterized. We have also tried theses complexes as catalysts in the oxidation of cyclohexanol and decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. |

Abstract: | In the present scenario, there is an increasing demand for natural products in food industry, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and agricultural sectors. In this context phytochemical study to identify newer chemicals has got great relevance. Phytochemical studies have become more reliable and encouraging with the development of modern analytical techniques. In the present work the leaves of Piper colubrinum (Piperaceae), aerial parts of Mussaenda fiondosa (Rubiaceae) and Humboldtia vahliana (Leguminosae) and the pericarp of fruits of Artocarpus heterophyllus (Moraceae) were investigated for their secondary metabolites. The major compounds isolated belong to the groups of flavonoids and triterpenoids.Naturally occurring flavonoids have been used widely in chemotaxonomic studies of plants. Flavones and flavonols constitute a group of biosynthetically related natural products. No universal function has been established for flavones and flavonols in plants. However, many functions in individual plants have been demonstrated. These include protection of plants from ultraviolet light, insects and pests; pollinator attractants; antioxidants; plant hormone controllers; enzyme inhibitors and allelopathic agents. Flavonoids are attracting the attention of medical scientists in recent years because of their anticarcinogenic, antiallergic and antiinflammatory properties. The recent discovery that flavonoids are involved in the process of nitrogen fixation in plants also opens the way for agricultural application of these constituents.Triterpenoids are another class of compounds that are ubiquitous in plants. Some triterpenoids present in the latex and resins of plants are believed to be involved in chemical defence against pathogens and herbivores. Triterpenoids possess various biological properties including anti-inflammatory, antifeedant, pesticidal, fungitoxic and antimicrobial activities. Triterpenoids with cytotoxic activity and inhibitory effect on seed germination are also known. |

Abstract: | This work was focused to study the immobilization of enzymes on polymers. A large range of polymer matrices have been employed as supports for enzyme immobilization. Here polyaniline (PAN!) and poly(0~toluidine) (POT) were used as supports. PANI and POT provides an excellent support for enzyme immobilization by virtue of its facile synthesis, superior chemical and physical stabilities, and large retention capacity. We selected industrially important starch hydrolyzing enzymes a-amylase and glucoamylase for the study. In this work the selected enzymes were immobilized via adsorption and covalent bonding methods. To optimize the catalytic efficiency and stability of the resulting biocatalysts, the attempt was made to understand the immobilization effects on enzymatic properties. The effect of pH of the immobilization medium, time of immobilization on the immobilization efficiency was observed. The starch hydrolyzing activity of free 0:-amylase and glucoamylase were compared with immobilized forms. Immobilization on solid supports changes the microenvironment of the enzyme there by influences the pH and temperature relationship on the enzymatic activity. Hence these parameters also optimized. The reusability and storage stability of immobilized enzymes an important aspect from an application standpoint, especially in industrial applications. Taking in to consideration of this, the reusability and the long tenn storage stability of the immobilized enzyme investigated. |

Abstract: | Most of the procedures reported for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles involve the use of strong reducing agents or elevated temperatures. This limits the possibility of developing metal nanoparticle based sensors for the in situ detection of analytes. One of the objectives of the present investigations is to (i) develop newer methodologies for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles in aqueous medium at ambient conditions and (ii) their use in the detection of metal cations by taking advantage of the unique coordination ability. Ideally, biocompatible molecules which possess both the reducing and stabilizing groups are desirable for such applications. Formation of stable supramolecular assembly, by bringing metal nanoparticles close to each other, results in plasmon coupling and this strategy can be effectively utilized for the development of metal nanoparticle based sensors.Another objective of the present study is to understand the supramolecular organization of molecules on surfaces. Various noncovalent interactions between the molecules and with surface play a decisive role in their organizations. An in-depth understanding of these interactions is essential for device fabrications. Recent photophysical studies have revealed that phenyleneethynylene based molecular systems are ideal for device application. The second objective of the thesis focuses on understanding the (i) organization of phenyleneethynylenes on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface with atomic level precision and (ii) weak intermolecular interactions which drive their organization. |
