Abstract: | The thesis deals with the synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity studies of some new Fe (III), Co (II), Ni (II) and Cu (II) complexes of hydrazones and their zeolite encapsulated analogues. Hydrazones have diverse applications in biological, non-biological and biochemical front. During the present study three hydrazone types of ligands namely, acetylacetone- 2-hydroxyphenylhydrazone (APAcAc), acetoacetanilide- 2-hydroxyphenylhydrazone (APAcAcA) and acetoacetanilide-3,5-dihydro-2,4-dione pyrimidylhydrazone (AUAcAcA) were synthesized by diazotization of primary amine and coupling with compounds containing active methylene group. First part of the thesis deals with the synthesis of Fe, Co, Ni and Cu complexes using three hydrazone types of ligands are given. Details regarding the characterization of these complexes with a view to establishing the molecular structures are presented in this part. The other part contains the method of encapsulation of these complexes in zeolite cavities and their characterizations of the encapsulated metal species are described. A comparitive account of the catalytic activities of the pure and encapsulated complexes for cyclohexanol oxidation was also carried out. |

Abstract: | In the present study an attempt has been made to synthesize some simple complexes of multidentate ligands. Analogous zeolite encapsulated complexes were also synthesized and characterized. Immobilization on to polymer supports through covalent attachment is expected to solve the problem of decomposition of many complexes during catalytic reaction. Hence the work is also extended to the synthesis and characterization of some polymer supported complexes of Schiff base Iigands. All the three types of synthesized complexes, simple, zeolite encapsulated and polystyrene anchored, were subjected to catalytic activity study towards catechol-oxidation reaction. A selected group of complexes were also screened for their catalytic activity towards phenol-oxidation reaction. Biological screening of the synthesized ligands and neat complexes were done with a view to establish the effect of complexation on biological systems. |

Abstract: | This thesis deals with the synthesis, characterisation and catalytic activity studies of some new transition metal complexes of the Schiff bases, derived from quinoxaline—2—carboxaldehyde. The model complexes derived from specially designed and synthesised Schiff bases help us to understand the chemistry of biological systems. Schiff bases derived from heterocyclic aldehydes like quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde provide great structural diversity during complexation. The Schiff bases synthesised in the present study ' are quinoxaline—2—carboxa.lidene-2-aminophenol (QAP). quinoxaline—2carboxaldehyde semicarbazone (QSC), quinoxaline-2—carboxalidene—o— phenylenediamine (QOD) and quinoxaline-2-carboxalidene-2-furfurylamine (QFA). The elucidation of the structure of these complexes is done using conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements. infrared, UV—Vis and EPR spectral studies. |

Abstract: | The discovery of the soliton is considered to be one of the most significant events of the twentieth century. The term soliton refers to special kinds of waves that can propagate undistorted over long distances and remain unaffected even after collision with each other. Solitons have been studied extensively in many fields of physics. In the context of optical fibers, solitons are not only of fundamental interest but also have potential applications in the field of optical fiber communications. This thesis is devoted to the theoretical study of soliton pulse propagation through single mode optical fibers. |

Abstract: | In this regard Schiff base complexes have attracted wide attention. Furthermore, such complexes are found to play important role in analytical chemistry, organic synthesis, metallurgy, refining of metals, electroplating and photography. Many Schiff base complexes are reported in literature. Their properties depend on the nature of the metal ion as well as on the nature of the ligand. By altering the ligands it is possible to obtain desired electronic environment around the metal ion. Thus there is a continuing interest in the synthesis of simple and zeolite encapsulated Schiff base complexes of metal ions. Zeolites have a number of striking structural similarities to the protein portion of natural enzymes. Zeolite based catalysts are known for their remarkable ability of mimicking the chemistry of biological systems. In view of the importance of catalysts in all the areas of modern chemical industries, an effort has been made to synthesize some simple Schiff base complexes, heterogenize them by encapsulating within the supercages of zeoliteY cavities and to study their applications. The thesis deals with studies on the synthesis and characterization of some simple and zeoliteY encapsulated Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes and on the catalytic activity of these complexes on some oxidation reactions. Simple complexes were prepared from the Schiff base ligands SBT derived from 2-aminobenzothiazole and salicylaldehyde and the ligand VBT derived from 2-aminobenzothiazole and vanillin (4-hydroxy-3- methoxybenzaldehyde). ZeoliteY encapsulated Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of Schiff base ligands SBT and VBT and also of 2-aminobenzothiazole were synthesized. All the prepared complexes were characterized using the physico-chemical techniques such as chemical analysis (employing AAS and CHN analyses), magnetic moment studies, conductance measurements and electronic and FTIR spectra. EPR spectra of the Cu(II) complexes were also carried out to know the probable structures and nature of Cu(II) complexes. Thermogravimetric analyses were carried out to obtain the information regarding the thermal stability of various complexes. The successful encapsulations of the complexes within the cavities of zeoliteY were ascertained by XRD, surface area and pore volume analysis. Assignments of geometries of simple and zeoliteY encapsulated complexes are given in all the cases. Both simple and zeoliteY encapsulated complexes were screened for catalytic activity towards oxidation reactions such as decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, oxidation of benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol and cyclohexanol. |

Abstract: | Zeolite encapsulated transition metal complexes have received wide attention as an effective heterogenized system that combines the tremendous activity of the metal complexes and the attractive features of the zeolite structure. Zeolite encapsulated complexes offer a bright future for attempts to replace homogeneous systems retaining its catalytic activity and minimizing the technical problems. especially for the partial oxidation of organic compounds. Studies on some zeolite encapsulated transition metal complexes are presented in this thesis. The ligands selected are technically important in a bio-mimetic or structural perspective. Attempts have been made in this study to investigate the composition, structure and stability of encapsulated complexes using available techniques. The catalytic activity of encapsulated complexes was evaluated for the oxidation of some organic compounds. The recycling ability of the catalyst as a result of the encapsulation was also studied. Our studies on Cu-Cr/Al2O3, a typical metal oxide catalyst. illustrate the use of design techniques to modify the properties of such conventional catalysts. The catalytic activity of this catalyst for the oxidation of carbon monoxide was measured. The effect of additives like Ce02 or Ti02 on the activity and stability of this system was also investigated. The additive is potent to improve the activity and stability ofthe catalyst so as to be more effective in commercial usage. |

Abstract: | For routing problems in interconnection networks it is important to find the shortest containers between any two vertices, since the w-wide diameter gives the maximum communication delay when there are up to w−1 faulty nodes in a network modeled by a graph. The concept of ‘wide diameter’ was introduced by Hsu [41] to unify the concepts of diameter and The concept of ‘domination’ has attracted interest due to its wide applications in many real world situations [38]. A connected dominating set serves as a virtual backbone of a network and it is a set of vertices that helps in routing. In this thesis, we make an earnest attempt to study some of these notions in graph products. This include, the diameter variability, the diameter vulnerability, the component factors and the domination criticality.connectivity |

Abstract: | The thesis deals with the synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity studies of supported cobalt(ii), nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of O-phenylenediamine and Schiff bases derived from 3-hydroxyquinoxaline -2-carboxaldehyde. Zeolite encapsulation and polymer anchoring was employed for supporting the complexes. The characterization techniques proved that the encapsulation as well as polymer supporting has been successfully achieved. The catalytic activity studies revealed that the activities of the simple complexes are improved upon encapsulation. Various characterization techniques are used such as, chemical analysis, EPR, magnetic measurements, FTIR studies, thermal analysis, electronic spectra, XRD, SEM, surface area, and GC.The present study indicated that the that the mechanism of oxidation of catechol and DTBC by hydrogen peroxide is not altered by the change in the coordination sphere around the metal ion due to encapsulation. This fact suggests outer sphere mechanism for the reactions. The catalytic activity by zeolite encapsulated complex was found to be slower than that by the neat complex. The slowing down of the reaction in the zeolite case is probably due to the constraint imposed by the zeolite framework. The rate of DTBC ( 3,5-di-tert-butylchatechol)oxidation was found to be greater than the rate of catechol oxidation. This is obviously due to the presence of electron donating tertiary butyl groups. |

Abstract: | The prime intension of the present work was a synthetic investigation of the preparation, surface properties and catalytic activity of some transition metal substituted copper chromite catalysts. Homogeneous co-precipitation method is employed for the preparation of catalysts. Since the knowledge about the structure and composition of the surface is critical in explaining the reactivity and selectivity of a solid catalyst. a systematic investigation of the physico-chemical properties of the prepared systems was carried out. The catalytic activity of these systems has also been measured in several oxidation reactions of industrial as well as environmental relevance. The thesis is dedicated to several aspects of chromite spinels giving emphasis to its preparation, characterization and catalytic performance towards oxidation reactions. |

Abstract: | Antioxidants are substances that when present at low concentrations compared to that of an oxidisable substrate significantly delays or inhibits oxidation of that substrate in food products or in living systems. Antioxidants are either endogenous to the body or derived from the diet. Several types of synthetic antioxidants like BHT, BHA, TBHQ etc. are also used in the food industry. However, findings and subsequent publicity has fostered significant consumer resistance to the use of synthetic food additives as antioxidants, colourants etc. and therefore food industry is in search of potential natural antioxidants from edible sources. The major dietary sources of antioxidant phytochemicals are cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables, oilseeds, beverages, spices and herbs. In the present study, we have focused on rice bran and its byproducts. Rice is one of the oldest of food crops and has been a staple food in India from very ancient times. It is also the staple food for about 60% of the world's population. Rice bran is a byproduct of the rice milling industry and is a potential commercial source of a healthy edible oil viz. rice bran oil and a variety of bio-active phytochemicals.Defatted rice bran (DRB), a byproduct of rice bran oil extraction, is also a good source of insoluble dietary fiber, protein, phytic acid, inosito I, vitamin B and a variety of other phytochemicals. Though the antioxidant potential of DRB has been demonstrated, it still remained a relatively unexplored source material, which demanded further investigation especially with regard to its detailed phytochemical profile leading to practical application. The focus of the present investigation therefore has been on DRB primarily to establish its phytochemical status and feasibility of using it as a source of bio-active phytochemicals and natural antioxidants leading to value addition of DRB otherwise used as cattle feed. To gain a better understanding of the value of rice bran as a source of phytochemicals, five popular rice varieties of the region viz. PTB 50, PTB 39, PTB 38, JA Y A, and MO 10 and a wild variety (oryza nivara) that is mainly used for medicinal applications in traditional ayurvedic system were characterized along with commercial samples of rice bran. The present study also explains the feasibility of a process for the extraction, enrichment, and isolation of antioxidant compounds from DRB. The antioxidant potential of the extracts were evaluated both in bulk oils and in food relevant model emulsions, using standard in vitro models. Radical scavenging effects, indicative of possible biological effects, were also evaluated. |

Abstract: | A comparative study of acid-base properties and catalytic activity of Sn-La and Sn-Sm mixed oxides and their corresponding sulfate modified analogues are reported in this thesis. The catalytic activity and product selectivity in the decomposition of alcohols are correlated with the acid-base and redox properties of the catalyst systems under study The effect of catalyst preparation, pretreatment and various reaction parameters on the catalytic activity of sulfate modified oxides is investigated in the oxidative dehydrogenation reactions The experimental conditions are optimised to synthesise industrially important organic chemicals viz. 2,6 xylenol, o-cresol, N-methylanilne and N,N-dimethylaniline employing the mixed oxide systems. The effect of sulfate treatment on the catalytic activity of these systems in the alkylation reactions of phenol, anisole and aniline is also investigated and the merits and demerits of sulfate treatment are highlighted. |

Abstract: | In the present thesis, an attempt has been made to study the characteristics of troposphere and lower stratosphere during the passage of tropical cyclones from a tropical station in India using MST radar. MST radar is an excellent tool for studying various features of the atmosphere from ground to mesospheric heights, as it can be operated continuously with good time and altitude resolution. The major objectives are to identify the multiple layers of reflectivity observed in the atmosphere during cyclones, to study the troposphere characteristics during these cyclones and its dependence on cyclone position and intensity, to detect the waves present in the atmosphere, to study the transport of momentum fluxes and to understand stratosphere. The winds in the troposphere and lower stratosphere are greatly affected by the passage of cyclones; the presence of high reflectivity layers below the tropopause suggests the passage of severe weather systems etc. are some of the major findings of the study. The study can be extended further to understand the circulation and dynamics of the atmosphere associated with the passage of tropical cyclones. The gravity wave generation and its characteristics during the passage of storms is another important aspect to be studied in detail. |

Abstract: | During the last couple of decades, the oil palm has emerged as the second largest source of edible oil in the world. Recently oil palm has been introduced commercially in India to augment edible oil supply in the country. Currently, about 10,000 hectares are under oil palm cultivation in India, and it is envisaged to cover about 6 lakh hectares in the coming years. Though oil palm is a major commercial oil crop, not much basic information on the lipids of the fruit (the source of palm oil) is available even where oil palm is cultivated in a very large scale. Being a new crop to India, it is of paramount importance to understand the basic chemistry/biochemistry of the lipids, which in turn, may find practical applications in the area of processing and product development. The present investigation entitled "Studies on the Composition and Structure of Palm Oil Glycerides" was designed with a view to elucidate the lipid composition and structure under conditions such as fruit development and processing. |
