Abstract:
The present study on naoplankton is based on the isolation and development of unialgai culturas from the inshore waters at Cochin. characterization of their growth assimilation products. ecophysioiogy and evaluation of nutritional quality. The work was carried out during the period 1980-1983. The nanoplankters were isolated and grown in the labratory as batch cultures to study the increase in cell population, the photosynthetic pigment: ana physioiogical activity. The chemical composition of these organisms and their rate of excretion were also determined. The environmental factors physical and chemical that influence the growth of these Cultures were defined by conducting independentexperiments. These cultures of the isolated nanoplankters have raised indoor and fed to the larvae of edible oyster to test their suitability as live-food.

Abstract:
The present investigations have considerably enhanced the existing knowledge on the biology and distribution/availability pattern of D.incarnatus in the Malippuram region. The species occurs in good concentration during October - March/April, and disappears from the area during late premonsoon and monsoon months. Recolonising the area in September, it grows fast in the subsequent months. The life span of the species is estimated to be about an year. Studies on the reproductive biology of the species have revealed that there are two spawning peaks, the major peak in February - March and minor peak, in December. The salinity regime of the area influences the reproductive activity. These observations form the original contribution in the thesis. The information on variation in water content, protein, glycogen and lipid levels in relation to reproductive cycle has helped to a better understanding of the gametogenic activity and spawning of the species. Similarly, the findings on salinity tolerance and filtration rate have shown that small sized clams exhibit greater tolerance range than larger clams, and grow at a faster rate with active metabolism. It is hoped that these information would considerably add to the present knowledge of the basic facts which are relevant to the improvement and management of the clam fishery of this region.

Abstract:
Detailed information on the biology of fishes is an essential
prerequisite for their proper conservation, management and
exploitation. An amplified knowledge on the biology isfundamentally
essential to plan sound management policies for rational utilization
of Nemipterid fishes along the Indian coast. Any information on the
biochemical composition of fishes will be of immense use in assessing
their nutritive value. The importance of understanding body
composition during growth is essential in production studies.
Detailed work on Nemipterid fishes has been done in other parts of
the world whereas along the Indian coast_ not much work has been
carried out. Hence the present investigation is undertaken on the
systematics of Nemipterids available at Cochin and the biology and
biochemical aspects of_N. jagonicus and_M. mesogrion
