Abstract: | The deteriorating air quality especially in urban environments is a cause of serious concern. In spite of being an effective sink, the atmosphere also has its own limitations in effectively dispersing the pollutants being dumped into it continuously by various sources, mainly industries. Many a time, it is not the higher emissions that cause alarming level of pollutants but the unfavourable atmospheric conditions under which the atmosphere is not able to disperse them effectively, leading to accumulation of pollutants near the ground. Hence, it is imperative to have an estimate of the atmospheric potential for dispersal of the substances emitted into it. This requires a knowledge of mixing height, ventilation coefficient, wind and stability of the region under study. Mere estimation of such pollution potential is not adequate, unless the probable distribution of concentration of pollutants is known. This can be obtained by means of mathematical models. The pollution potential coupled with the distribution of concentration provides a good basis for initiating steps to mitigate air pollution in any developing urban area. In this thesis, a fast developing industrial city, namely, Trivandrum is chosen for estimating the pollution potential and determining the spatial distribution of sulphur dioxide concentration. Each of the parameters required for pollution potential is discussed in detail separately. The thesis is divided into nine chapters. |

Abstract: | The main aim of the study is to give a clear picture of various meteorological factors affecting the dispersal of pollutants. One such important developing metropolis, namely Madras, is chosen for the present study. The study throws light into the occurrence of inversions, isothermals and lapse conditions and the vertical and horizontal extent of mixing of pollutants. The thesis also aims to study the wind climatology and atmospheric stability .The study gives a insight to the spatial distribution of sulphudioxide concentration using the Gaussian plume model, which accounts for various industrial sources. The researcher suggests optimum locations for industries and various steps to reduce air pollution. |

Abstract: | Some investigations on the spectral and statistical characteristics of deep water waves are available for Indian waters. But practically no systematic investigation on the shallow water wave spectral and probabilistic characteristics is made for any part of the Indian coast except for a few restricted studies. Hence a comprehensive study of the shallow water wave climate and their spectral and statistical characteristics for a location (Alleppey) along the southwest coast of India is undertaken based on recorded data. The results of the investigation are presented in this thesis. The thesis comprises of seven chapters |

Abstract: | Detailed information on the biology of fishes is an essential prerequisite for their proper conservation, management and exploitation. An amplified knowledge on the biology isfundamentally essential to plan sound management policies for rational utilization of Nemipterid fishes along the Indian coast. Any information on the biochemical composition of fishes will be of immense use in assessing their nutritive value. The importance of understanding body composition during growth is essential in production studies. Detailed work on Nemipterid fishes has been done in other parts of the world whereas along the Indian coast_ not much work has been carried out. Hence the present investigation is undertaken on the systematics of Nemipterids available at Cochin and the biology and biochemical aspects of_N. jagonicus and_M. mesogrion |

Abstract: | The thesis focused Studies on Energy Exchange and Upper Ocean Thermal Structure in Arabian Sea and Heat Transport in Northern Indian Ocean. The present thesis is an attempt to understand the upper ocean thermal characteristics at selected areas in the western and eastern Arabian Sea in relation to surface energy exchange and dynamics, on a climatological basis. It is also aimed to examine, the relative importance of different processes in the evolution of SST at the western and eastern Arabian Sea. Short-term variations of energy exchange and upper ocean thermal structure are also investigated. Climatological studies of upper ocean thermal structure and surface energy exchange in the western and eastern parts of Arabian Sea bring out the similarities/differences and the causative factors for the observed features. Annual variation of zonally averaged heat advection in north Indian Ocean shows that maximum export of about 100 W/m2 occurs around 15ON during southwest monsoon season. This is due to large negative heat storage caused by intense upwelling in several parts of northern Indian Ocean. By and large, northern Indian Ocean is an area of heat export |

Abstract: | Culturing of fish in captivity demands a detailed knowledge on well balanced diet and adequate feeding. Formulation and production of nutritionally balanced diets for fish require research, quality control and biological evaluation. It is often assuemed that what is ingested is also digested, but this is not always be the case. Digestion depends upon both the physical state of the food and the kind and quantity of enzymes in the digestive tract. The ability of fish to digest a particular component of diet can be ascertained by investigating the complement of digestive enzymes present along the digestive tract. Investigations on the basic digestive physiology will not only enhance our present knowledge on nutrition and feed development, but will also contribute in understanding the digestive functions of lower vertebrates. It is against this background that the present topic of investigation "Studies on the digestive enzymes of the cultivable grey mullet Liza parsia Hamilton Buchanan, l822" has been selected. The thesis is arranged and presented in eight chapters. |

Abstract: | Most tropical aquatic environments are naturally fertile and their natural fertility is renewed very rapidly. Natural food for many cultivable organisms can be grown to the maximum by proper management. However, enrichment of the environment can be done through rational fertilization. Still further increase in stocking rates, can yield increased crop if adequate feeding is done. Thus fish and shellfish nutrition is an important aspect of the multidisciplinary subject of aquaculture. The oldest and most classical studies in physiology have investigated the nutritional needs of the species of interest to aquaculture. The alimentary requirements for proteins, lipids, mineral salts and vitamins have been established for some temperate species. But, the nutritional requirements of only few tropical species have been studied. Before formulating a diet, a thorough knowledge of the nutrient requirement of the species is essential. It is against this background that the present area of investigation has been identified. "Nutritional requirements of the fry of gold-spot mullet Liza parsia" is a comprehensive attempt to quantify the nutritional factors that are essential for producing healthy fingerlings for stocking the farms. Aspects such as the protein and lipid requirements of the fry, the vitamin essentiality, nutritive evaluation of protein and lipid sources suitable for compounding diets were covered in this research project. The ultimate aim has been to evolve practical diets which could be applied in the nursery phase for juvenile production. |

Abstract: | From the point of view of rational exploitation and proper management of the fishery resources as well as for the development of intensive aquaculture of fishes through selective breeding, brood stock development, domestication and genetic improvement, a sound knowledge of reproductive biology and physiology of the candidate species is of great importance. In recent times, a wealth of information on maturity, spawning habits, spawning periodicity, spawning season, size at maturity and fecundity of commercially important fishes has been generated. Gametogenesis involves the transformation of Primordial germ cells in the gonads into specialised cells or gametes, namely ova in the female and sperms in male, through a series of complex morphological and cytological events. The formation of male gamete is known as spermatogenesis. In the female, the primary growth phase involving the formation of primary oocyte from oogonia is known as oogenesis, which would be followed by the secondary growth phase, in which considerable increase in the size of the oocyte occurs, due mainly to accumulation of yolk. This process is known as vitellogenesis, which would be followed by final maturation and ovulation of the ova. In the present work, basic aspects of maturation and spawning, salient features of gametogenesis and associated biochemical changes occurring during these processes in an important cultivable fish, Sillago sihama belonging to the family Sillaginidae have been investigated. |

Abstract: | The efficiency of a diet not only depends on its nutrient composition and nutrient balance but also on the effective utilization by the animal. In the utilization of dietary nutrients, the digestive enzymes play the crucial role of catalysing the hydrolytic reactions, splitting the macromolecules into simple absorbable molecules. The activity of these biocatalysts is regulated by alterations in pH, temperature, substrate type and concentrations, and also by the presence of activators and inhibitors. Thus any shift from the optimum conditions necessary for these enzymes may affect their activity, thereby correspondingly modify the digestibility of the nutrients supplied to the animals. Thus, investigations on the important digestive enzymes and their preferential conditions of activity are essential, so that the results obtained could be used in rationally adjusting the quality and quantity of feed supplied to the different stages of prawns In India, directed research on nutritional physiology and biochemical approaches to digestion in commercially important prawns is taken up_ only recently, and the field is still in an infant stage. In view of its emerging importance it is identified as an area of priority and the present investigation has been carried out on the Indian white prawn Penaeus indicus |

Abstract: | The present investigation has been carried out to understand the process and events leading to maturation of the ovary and testis in the Indian white prawn Penaeus indicus. The study includes the classification of the ovarian maturity stages based on its colour, gonadosomatic index, oocyte diameter and morphological changes in the oocyte. Further the process of oogenesis has been investigated using light and electron microscopic techniques. A histochemical study of the ovary has also been carried out to determine the sequence in which yolk substances are synthesized or sequestered in the oocytes and also to elicit the nature of the penaeid yolk material. The process of spermatogenesis and the development of the spermatophore has been studied in detail using light and electron microscopic methods. In addition a brief histochemical study on the testis was also made to understand the nature of the organic reserves in the sperm cells. |

Abstract: | The main objective of the study is primarily to determine the magnitude of selected trace elements, the concentrations of which would possibly accelerate growth resulting in larger biomass and sustained period of exponential phase for economically viable harvest. The study on the effect of three trace elements namely Cu, Mn and Zn on two species of algae,ISOChrySiS galbana Parke and Synechocystib salina Wislouch under different conditions of salinity, PH and temperature involves several combinations for each metal, from which the relative set of conditions has been adduced. The scheme of the experiments was statistically designed for interpretation of data and factors were assessed and graded according to relative importance. The methodology adopted for data interpretation is analysis of variance by split-plot design method. The thesis has been divided into five chapters. The introductory chapter explains the relevance of the research work undertaken. Chapter 11 gives a review on the work pertaining to the above mentioned three trace elements in relation to nutrition as well as on the toxic aspects about which there is an abundance of literature. Chapter Ill presents a detailed description of the material and specialised methods followed for the study. The results and conclusions of the various experiments on effect of metals on growth and other physiological activities are discussed in Chapters IV and V. |

Abstract: | The thesis entitled Studies on the Dynamics of Cochin Estuary. This thesis is addressed to an investigation on the tidal, seasonal and spatial variations of the hydrographic parameters, circulation and mixing processes of the Cochin estuary. The present programme of study is aimed at obtaining a comprehensive picture of the tidal characteristics, hydrography, circulation and mixing present in this estuarine system during different seasons. The studies have been carried out through field collection of data on salinity, temperature and water currents to get a picture of their spatial and temporal variations. The hydrographic data have been analysed in relation to tide, rainfall and river discharges. From the findings it is seen that at the Cochin inlet, the estuarine features vary annually. During July and August, the estuary is characterised as almost saltwedge type; during June, September, October, December and January it shows appreciabie stratification, and during the rest of the months the estuary shows almost well mixed nature. Seasonal variations are well reflected in water temperature in the Cochin estuary, where the temperature reaches its maximum during the dry pre monsoon period with very weak thermal gradients indicating strong vertical mixing |

Abstract: | The thesis presents the results of the studies carried out on certain diseases encountered in the larvae and postlarvae of penaeid prawns raised in the hatcheries at Cochin, Madras and Mandapam Camp during September 1985- April 1988. In the preliminary survey carried out to understand the common diseases occurring in the penaeid larvae and postlarvae, seven cases of diseases and abnormalities were encountered. These included ciliate infestation, Nit_zschia closteriurn infestation, parasitic protozoaninfection, parasitic dinoflagellate infection, appendage necrosis, heteromorphic eye and abnormal eggs and deformed nauplii .The clinical signs, seasonal occurrence and incidence of each of the above cases were provided along with the information on environmental factors such as salinity, dissolved oxygen, temperature and pH of the rearing medium. The Thésis is presented in nine chapters. Chapter 1 surveys the literature on the diseases of penaeid larvae, postlarvae and adult prawns from India and abroad. This is followed by a chapter on the material and methods employed during the present investigation. In the third chapter, seven cases of diseases and abnormalities encountered in the larvae and postlarvae of Penaeus indicus and p. semisulcatus during the survey carried out in the hatcheries located at different centres of Central‘ Marine Fisheries Research Institute are presented and discussed .A bacterium responsible for appendage necrosis was isolated and its taxonomy was studied. It was Gram-negative, fermentative and motile rod. It was sensitive to vibriostatic compound, 0/129. This bacterium was found to be a new isolate of vibrio on the basis of its morphological, biological, physiological and biochemical characters and comparison of these characters with those described for other related vibrios. This new isolate of vibrio was deposited in vibro Referrence Laboratory, Centres for Disease Control, Georgia, U.S.A. and coded as vibrio sp. 2448-88. |
