Abstract: | Mackerel fishery at many places in the country including Cochin as well as at all—India level, besides its seasonal changes to have long-term flucations apparently evincing a ten-year cycle. Published literature on the fishery and biology of mackerel at many places are available. But attempts on population studies and assessment of stock are scanty. The researchers attention at this juncture turned to investigations on population dynamics of the mackerel .On account of the long-term Fluctuations in the fishery, it was felt desirable to have data For a number of years together to facilitate adequate coverage of a unit of time in the 10-year cycle. Investigations on length weight relationships for 16 seasons were hence carried out. This thesis is written eection'by section embodying‘ the results and_findings of the work carried out under different subject areas. It contains sections on identity of the species, information on its spatial and temporal distribution along the Indian coast, study on length-weight relationships, growth and age determination, population studies and stock assessment, and discussions. This dissertation is the outcome of the works of the candidate on the Indian mackerel. The work, however is based on exploited resource of the inshore waters. In the course of this analysis, lacunae existing in the investigations on the Indian mackerel are therefore identified and presented For future work |

Abstract: | Curing is the oldest and cheapest method of preservation of fish allover the world. Fish curing industry has not shown much improverrent from its primitive nature because this industry is mainly handled by illiterate and less educated fishermen/fisherwomen. They do not know much about, the importance of scientific methods of fish curing. The cured fish produced by them is unhygienic and poor in quality. Because of the negligenence and ignorance of the fish curers, a considerable quanti ty of this protein rich food is spoiled and lost every year. Research has been conducted extensively in the Cen tral and State sectors and various remedial measures have been suggested :to improve the fish curing industry in India. Inspi te of the preJudioa against cured fish because of their existing low quality, research work in recent years have indicated that their quality can be greaUy improved and shelf-life prolonged if the me thods are standardised. To achieve this aim, Cen tral and s tate Departments have already made considerable efforts to transfer the improved methods ~ the fish curing industry by way of traininq courses, demonstrations, Lab, to Land Prograrrmesi film shows, exhibitions, personal discussion etc. As the result of this, fish curers have started adopting the improved practices in fish curing. Still there seems to be a considerable qap between the techmology available and the technology adopted in this field. A comprehensive study on the extent of adoption of improved practices in fish curing and the factors involved in low or non-adoption of certain aspects is lackin~ at present. This gap has to be filled up. The possihle methods for the effective transfer of technology for the production and distribution of high quali ty cured fish products and improvement of soclo-economic condition of fishermen engaqed in fish curing have to be identified. |

Abstract: | Pollutants that once enter into the earth’s atmosphere become part of the atmosphere and hence their dispersion, dilution, direction of transportation etc. are governed by the meteorological conditions. The thesis deals with the study of the atmospheric dispersion capacity, wind climatology, atmospheric stability, pollutant distribution by means of a model and the suggestions for a comprehensive planning for the industrially developing city, Cochin. The definition, sources, types and effects of air pollution have been dealt with briefly. The influence of various meteorological parameters such as vector wind, temperature and its vertical structure and atmospheric stability in relation to pollutant dispersal have been studied. The importance of inversions, mixing heights, ventilation coefficients were brought out. The spatial variation of mixing heights studies for the first time on a microscale region, serves to delineate the regions of good and poor dispersal capacity. A study of wind direction fluctuation, σθ and its relation to stability and mixing heights were shown to be much useful. It was shown that there is a necessity to look into the method of σθ computation. The development of Gausssian Plume Model along with the application for multiple sources was presented. The pollutant chosen was sulphur dioxide and industrial sources alone were considered. The percentage frequency of occurrence of inversions and isothermals are found to be low in all months during the year. The spatial variation of mixing heights revealed that a single mixing height cannot be taken as a representative for the whole city have low mixing heights and monsoonal months showed lowest mixing heights. The study of ventilation co-efficients showed values less than the required optimum value 6000m2/5. However, the low values may be due to the consideration of surface wind alone instead of the vertically averaged wind. Relatively more calm conditions and light winds during night and strong winds during day time were observed. During the most of the year westerlies during day time and northeasterlies during night time are the dominant winds. Unstable conditions with high values of σθ during day time and stable conditions with lower values of σθ during night time are the prominent features. Monsoonal months showed neutral stability for most of the time. A study σθ of and Pasquill Stability category has revealed the difficulty in giving a unique value of for each stability category. For the first time regression equations have been developed relating mixing heights and σθ. A closer examination of σθ revealed that half of the range of wind direction fluctuations is to be taken, instead of one by sixth, to compute σθ. The spatial distribution of SO2 showed a more or less uniform distribution with a slight intrusion towards south. Winter months showed low concentrations contrary to the expectations. The variations of the concentration is found to be influenced more by the mixing height and the stack height rather than wind speed. In the densely populated areas the concentration is more than the threshold limit value. However, the values reported appear to be high, because no depletion of the material is assumed through dry or wet depositions and also because of the inclusion of calm conditions with a very light wind speed. A reduction of emission during night time with a consequent rise during day time would bring down the levels of pollution. The probable locations for the new industries could be the extreme southeast parts because the concentration towards the north falls off very quickly resulting low concentrations. In such a case pollutant spread would be towards south and west, thus keeping the city interior relatively free from pollution. A more detailed examination of the pollutant spread by means of models that would take the dry and wet depositions may be necessary. Nevertheless, the present model serves to give the trend of the distribution of pollutant concentration with which one can suggest the optimum locations for the new industries |

Abstract: | Microbiological studies on the incidence, behaviour, activity and ecological implications of marine micro~organisms, particularly microbial pathogens in coastal waters and estuaries exhibit the increasing concern and awareness of environmental impacts on health and wealth. Marine microbiologists have been active in investigating on the distribution, kinds of organisms and their activity in the environment. However, informations on the effect of environment on the ecology or on the distribution (spatial/temporal) of microbial comunity and competition among groups inhabiting the ecosystem are sparE§L Estuarine environment are complex with respect to diversity of habitats, variation in physicochemical parameters and contamination by terrestrial bacterial species. Being the organisms of‘public health significance, ecological studies on total coliforms, faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci, §. ggli and X. parahaemolyticus have great relevance as studies of these types would provide a wealth of information to environmentalists and to fishery industry. In order to evalé%e the status, role and significance of potentially hazardous bacterial species in natural environment it is necessary to monitor the ecology of such organisms systematically in relation to physico-chemical parameters |

Abstract: | In India industrial pollution has become a subject of increasing concern.Incidents of industrial pollution have been reported from many parts of the country. Cochin, the collection site of the present study, being the industrial capital of Kerela is also a harbour, is vulnerable to pollution by trace metal contaminants. In the recent times, pollutants of greatest concern in the aquatic environment are those which are persistent such as toxic heavy metals and the chlorinated hydrocarbons which include insecticides and pesticides. The animals collected from the clam bed situated on the northern side af Cochin bermouth are subject to wide fluctuations in salinity both seasonal and tidal. also; salinity is considered as an important parameter influencing the.-physiological functioning of an organism. Hence, the salinity tolerance of the animal is worked out. Considering the potential vulnerability of Cochin backwaters to heavy metal pollution, the impact of heavy metal copper (II) on the bivalve Sunetta sripta was conceived. Static bioassays were conducted for the determination of the sublethal concentrations of the metal as a preliminary step towards the toxicity studies. Oxygen consumption and filtration rate which are considered as reliable sublethal toxicity indices were employed for investigating the toxic effects of the metal. Bioaccumulation, a physiological phenomenon which can be of importance from the public health point of view, and also in the assessment of environmental quality is also dealt with. |

Abstract: | Ocean persists as a rich and renewable source of cheap protein for the whole world. Among the prawns/shrimps landed from the Indian Ocean and her backwaters, more than 90% are exported to affluent countries. The Indian white prawn Penaeus indicus, constitutes the major portion of the frozen shrimps exported from India every year. The present study is aimed at gathering information on the total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) associated with B. indicus, with special reference to eggs, nauplii, zoeae, mysis, and post larvae in hatchery, and juveniles and adults in culture pond. Simultaneously, IHB associated with E. indicus in its natural habitat also is studied for comparison. It is envisaged that this information will be highly useful for modifying the existing hatchery and pond management-practices. |

Abstract: | The thesis entitled Studies on Thermal Structure in the Seas Around India. An attempt is made in this study to document the observed variability of thermal structure, both on seasonal and short-term scales, in the eastern Arabian Sea and southwestern Bay of Bengal, from the spatial and time series data sets from a reasonably strong data base. The present study has certain limitations. The mean temperatures are based on an uneven distribution of data in space and time. Some of the areas, although having a ‘full annual coverage, do not have adequate data for some months. Some portions in the area under study are having data gaps. The consistency and the coherence in the internal wave characteristics could not be examined due to non-availability of adequate data sets. The influence of generating mechanisms; other than winds and tides on the observed internal wave fields could not be ascertained due to lack of data. However, a comprehensive and intensive data collection can overcome these limitations. The deployment of moored buoys with arrays of sensors at different depths at some important locations for about 5 to 10 years can provide intensive and extensive data sets. This strong data base can afford to address the short-term and seasonal variability of thermal field and understand in detail the individual and collective influences of various physical and dynamical mechanisms responsible for such variability. |

Abstract: | Cochin backwaters, a tropical barbuilt estuary is well known for its prawn, molluscan and demersal fisheries. Also it formed the dumping area for sewage,235 retting of husks and discharge of effluents from industries located on either side of it. As a result the fishery is being gradually dwindled year after year due to the lowering of the water quality. The effect of industrial polution on the benthic community of this tropical estuary was worked out. An area extending over 21 km from the mouth of the estuary to upstream of industrial belt was selected. Temporal and spatial variations of 16 environmental parameters at 9 stations along the area were monitored monthly during 1981. Benthic fauna of these 9 stations consisted of amphipods , polychaetes, isopods, tanaidaceans, molluscs and other crustaceans (Decapods, Acetes, Alpheids, Balanus, insect larvae, chironomid larvae, cumacea and some fresh water forms ). Apart from these, sea anemone, flat worms, nematodes, sipunculoids, echinoderms and fishes were also encountered. 75 species belonging to 31 faunal groups were identified. Of these 31 groups, amphipods, polychaedes, isopods, tanaidaceans and molluscs were numerically abundant. Rest of the 26 groups (including 13 riverine forms) were found less significant due to their rare occurrence/low numerical abundance. Polychaetes and molluscs were the only major groups present at all the stations. |

Abstract: | This thesis is the result of an elaborate study on the mixed layer depth (MLD) and the various oceanic environmental factors controlling it in the Arabian Sea examining its predictability on annual and short term basis. To accomplish this, the study area between 100 — 250 N latitudes and 600 — 750 E longitudes in the Arabian Sea is divided into 8 subareas of 50 quadrangles. The distribution of monthly means of the surface wind field, net heat exchange mKi868€%WTmN¥tWMWF3UH9 (SST) over each subarea in the annual cycle is examined. The corresponding wind (mechanical) and convective mixing values are computed and presented along with the observed mean MLD for the subareas in the annual cycle. Effects of advection due to surface currents and surface divergence (convergence and divergence) for these subareas are examined for correlating the MLD variations. A representative time series data from typical deep water station under southwest monsoonal forcing is analysed for the spectral components to estimate the amplitude perturbations on the mean MLD variation |
