Abstract: | With the recent progress and rapid increase in mobile terminals, the design of antennas for small mobile terminals is acquiring great importance. In view of this situation, several design concepts are already been addressed by the scientists and engineers. Compactness and efficiency are the major criteria for mobile terminal antennas. The challenging task of the microwave scientists and engineers is to device compact printed radiating systems having broadband behavior, together with good efficiency. Printed antenna technology has received popularity among antenna scientists after the introduction of microstrip antenna in 1970s. The successors in this kind such as printed monopoles and planar inverted F are also equally important. Scientists and Engineers are trying to explore this technology as a viable coast effective solution for forthcoming microwave revolution. The transmission line perspectives of antennas are very interesting. The concept behind any electromagnetic radiator is simple. Any electromagnetic system with a discontinuity is radiating electromagnetic energy. The size, shape and the orientation of the discontinuities controls the radiation characteristics of the system such as radiation pattern, gain, polarization etc. It can be either resonant or non resonant structure. |

Abstract: | Learning Disability (LD) is a general term that describes specific kinds of learning problems. It is a neurological condition that affects a child's brain and impairs his ability to carry out one or many specific tasks. The learning disabled children are neither slow nor mentally retarded. This disorder can make it problematic for a child to learn as quickly or in the same way as some child who isn't affected by a learning disability. An affected child can have normal or above average intelligence. They may have difficulty paying attention, with reading or letter recognition, or with mathematics. It does not mean that children who have learning disabilities are less intelligent. In fact, many children who have learning disabilities are more intelligent than an average child. Learning disabilities vary from child to child. One child with LD may not have the same kind of learning problems as another child with LD. There is no cure for learning disabilities and they are life-long. However, children with LD can be high achievers and can be taught ways to get around the learning disability. In this research work, data mining using machine learning techniques are used to analyze the symptoms of LD, establish interrelationships between them and evaluate the relative importance of these symptoms. To increase the diagnostic accuracy of learning disability prediction, a knowledge based tool based on statistical machine learning or data mining techniques, with high accuracy, according to the knowledge obtained from the clinical information, is proposed. The basic idea of the developed knowledge based tool is to increase the accuracy of the learning disability assessment and reduce the time used for the same. Different statistical machine learning techniques in data mining are used in the study. Identifying the important parameters of LD prediction using the data mining techniques, identifying the hidden relationship between the symptoms of LD and estimating the relative significance of each symptoms of LD are also the parts of the objectives of this research work. The developed tool has many advantages compared to the traditional methods of using check lists in determination of learning disabilities. For improving the performance of various classifiers, we developed some preprocessing methods for the LD prediction system. A new system based on fuzzy and rough set models are also developed for LD prediction. Here also the importance of pre-processing is studied. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) is designed for developing an integrated knowledge based tool for prediction of LD as well as its degree. The designed tool stores the details of the children in the student database and retrieves their LD report as and when required. The present study undoubtedly proves the effectiveness of the tool developed based on various machine learning techniques. It also identifies the important parameters of LD and accurately predicts the learning disability in school age children. This thesis makes several major contributions in technical, general and social areas. The results are found very beneficial to the parents, teachers and the institutions. They are able to diagnose the child’s problem at an early stage and can go for the proper treatments/counseling at the correct time so as to avoid the academic and social losses. |

Abstract: | PP has been getting much attention over the years because it is a very durable polymer commonly used in aggressive environments including automotive battery casings, fuel containers etc. They are used to make bottles, fibers for clothing, components in cars etc. However, it has some shortcomings such as low dimensional and thermal stability. Materials such as metal oxides with sizes of the order 1–50 nm have received a great deal of attention because of their versatile applications in polymer/ inorganic nanocomposites, optoelectronic devices, biomedical materials, and other areas. They are stable under harsh process conditions and also regarded as safe materials to human beings and animals. In the present investigation, PP is modified by incorporating metal oxide nanoparticles such as ZnO and TiO2 by simple melt mixing method. Melt spinning method was used to prepare PP/metal oxide nanocomposite fibers. Various studies have been carried out on these composites and fibers. In the first part of the study, ZnO nanoparticles were prepared from ZnCl2 and NaOH in presence of chitosan, PVA, ethanol and starch. This is a simple and inexpensive method compared to other methods. Change in morphology and particle size of ZnO were studied. Least particle size was obtained in chitosan medium. The particles were characterized by using XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA and EDAX. Antibacterial properties of ZnO prepared in chitosan medium (NZO) and commercial zinc oxide (CZO) were evaluated using a gram positive and a gram negative bacteria |

Abstract: | The thesis describes studies on development of short Nylon-6 fibre composites based on rubber-toughened polystyrene (PS). Toughening was done using natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and whole tyre reclaim (WTR). The composites were prepared by melt mixing in an internal mixer at 170 oC. It was found that the optimum blend ratio was 85/15 for PS/NR, 90/10 for PS/SBR and 90/22 for PS/WTR blends. The effect of dynamic vulcanisation on 85/15 PS/NR and 90/10 PS/SBR blends using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) at various concentrations were also studied. The dynamic crosslinking improved the tensile properties, flexural properties, impact strength and dynamic mechanical properties of both the blends. The effect of unmodified and resorcinol formaldehyde latex (RFL)-coated short Nylon-6 fibres on the mechanical properties, morphology and dynamic mechanical properties of 85/15 PS/NR, 90/10 PS/SBR and 90/22 PS/WTR blends were studied. Fibre loading was varied from 0 to 3 wt.%. For 85/15 PS/NR blend, there was a significant enhancement in tensile properties, flexural properties and impact strength with 1 wt.% of both unmodified and RFL-coated fibres. Dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the storage modulus at room temperature was maximum at 1 wt.% fiber loading for both composites. The surface functionality of the fiber was improved by giving alkali treatment. Maleic anhydride-grafted-polystyrene (MA-g-PS) was prepared and used as a compatibiliser. The effect of MA-g-PS on the composites was investigated with respect to mechanical properties, morphology and dynamic mechanical properties. The compatibiliser loading was varied from 0 to 2 wt.%. The properties were enhanced significantly in the case of treated and untreated fibre composites at a compatibiliser loading of 0.75 wt.%. SEM analysis confirmed better bonding between the fibre and the matrix. Dynamic mechanical studies showed that the storage modulus at room temperature improved for treated fibre composites in the presence of compatibiliser. In the case of 90/10 PS/SBR composites, the addition of short Nylon-6 fibres at 1 wt.% loading improved the tensile modulus, flexural properties and impact strength while the tensile strength was marginally reduced. The surface treated fibers along with compatibiliser at 0.5 wt.% improved the tensile properties, flexural properties and impact strength. DMA reveale that the storage modulus at room temperature was better for composites containing untreated fibre and the compatibiliser. In the case of 90/22 PS/WTR blends, 1 wt.% unmodified fibre and 0.5 wt.% RFL-coated fibres improved tensile modulus, flexural properties and impact strength. Tensile strength was improved marginally. The surface treatment of Nylon fibre and the addition of compatibiliser at 0.5 wt.% enhanced the tensile properties, flexural properties and impact strength. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage modulus at room temperature was better for untreated fibre composites in conjunction with the compatibiliser. The thermal stability of PS/NR was studied by TGA. Thermal stability of the blends improved with dynamic vulcanisation and with the incorporation of RFL-coated Nylon fibres. The untreated and partially hydrolyzed fibre composites in conjunction with the compatibiliser enhanced the thermal stability. Kinetic studies showed that the degradation of the blends and the composites followed first order kinetics. |

Abstract: | Handwriting is an acquired tool used for communication of one's observations or feelings. Factors that inuence a person's handwriting not only dependent on the individual's bio-mechanical constraints, handwriting education received, writing instrument, type of paper, background, but also factors like stress, motivation and the purpose of the handwriting. Despite the high variation in a person's handwriting, recent results from different writer identification studies have shown that it possesses sufficient individual traits to be used as an identification method. Handwriting as a behavioral biometric has had the interest of researchers for a long time. But recently it has been enjoying new interest due to an increased need and effort to deal with problems ranging from white-collar crime to terrorist threats. The identification of the writer based on a piece of handwriting is a challenging task for pattern recognition. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a text independent writer identification system for Malayalam Handwriting. The study also extends to developing a framework for online character recognition of Grantha script and Malayalam characters |

Abstract: | Assembly job shop scheduling problem (AJSP) is one of the most complicated combinatorial optimization problem that involves simultaneously scheduling the processing and assembly operations of complex structured products. The problem becomes even more complicated if a combination of two or more optimization criteria is considered. This thesis addresses an assembly job shop scheduling problem with multiple objectives. The objectives considered are to simultaneously minimizing makespan and total tardiness. In this thesis, two approaches viz., weighted approach and Pareto approach are used for solving the problem. However, it is quite difficult to achieve an optimal solution to this problem with traditional optimization approaches owing to the high computational complexity. Two metaheuristic techniques namely, genetic algorithm and tabu search are investigated in this thesis for solving the multiobjective assembly job shop scheduling problems. Three algorithms based on the two metaheuristic techniques for weighted approach and Pareto approach are proposed for the multi-objective assembly job shop scheduling problem (MOAJSP). A new pairing mechanism is developed for crossover operation in genetic algorithm which leads to improved solutions and faster convergence. The performances of the proposed algorithms are evaluated through a set of test problems and the results are reported. The results reveal that the proposed algorithms based on weighted approach are feasible and effective for solving MOAJSP instances according to the weight assigned to each objective criterion and the proposed algorithms based on Pareto approach are capable of producing a number of good Pareto optimal scheduling plans for MOAJSP instances. |

Abstract: | Microarray data analysis is one of data mining tool which is used to extract meaningful information hidden in biological data. One of the major focuses on microarray data analysis is the reconstruction of gene regulatory network that may be used to provide a broader understanding on the functioning of complex cellular systems. Since cancer is a genetic disease arising from the abnormal gene function, the identification of cancerous genes and the regulatory pathways they control will provide a better platform for understanding the tumor formation and development. The major focus of this thesis is to understand the regulation of genes responsible for the development of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer by analyzing the microarray expression data. In this thesis, four computational algorithms namely fuzzy logic algorithm, modified genetic algorithm, dynamic neural fuzzy network and Takagi Sugeno Kang-type recurrent neural fuzzy network are used to extract cancer specific gene regulatory network from plasma RNA dataset of colorectal cancer patients. Plasma RNA is highly attractive for cancer analysis since it requires a collection of small amount of blood and it can be obtained at any time in repetitive fashion allowing the analysis of disease progression and treatment response. |

Abstract: | Antennas, the key element in wireless communication devices had undergone amazing developments especially in the direction of compactness and safety aspects. In the last two decades, the use of the cellular phones has become the most popular mode of communication across the globe. At the same time, the concerns about the radiation effects have increased in the general public. The main concern of this thesis is to develop a mobile antenna which gives reduced RF interference to the user. The reduction of the power absorbed by the user can tremendously avoid any possible health hazards. The radiation characteristic of a monopole antenna is modified with good radiation characteristics suitable for a mobile handset. The modification is implemented by using different resonating structures which provides reduced radiation along one direction. The direction of less radiation can be changed by modifying the planar antenna structure to a ground folded antenna. This modified structure with excellent radiation characteristic is suitable for modern wireless handheld devices with less user RF interference. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is an important parameter for mobile handset. The SAR is estimated for the newly developed antenna for different conditions and discussed in this thesis. |

Abstract: | Biodegradation is the chemical degradation of materials brought about by the action of naturally occurring microorganisms. Biodegradation is a relatively rapid process under suitable conditions of moisture, temperature and oxygen availability. The logic behind blending biopolymers such as starch with inert polymers like polyethylene is that if the biopolymer component is present in sufficient amount, and if it is removed by microorganisms in the waste disposal environment, then the base inert plastic should slowly degrade and disappear. The present work focuses on the preparation of biodegradable and photodegradable blends based on low density polyethylene incorporating small quantities of ionomers as compatibilizers. The thesis consists of eight chapters. The first chapter presents an introduction to the present research work and literature survey. The details of the materials used and the experimental procedures undertaken for the study are described in the second chapter. Preparation and characterization of low density polyethylene (LDPE)-biopolymer (starch/dextrin) blends are described in the third chapter. The result of investigations on the effect of polyethylene-co-methacrylic acid ionomers on the compatibility of LDPE and starch are reported in chapter 4. Chapter 5 has been divided into two parts. The first part deals with the effect of metal oxides on the photodegradation of LDPE. The second part describes the function of metal stearates on the photodegradation of LDPE. The results of the investigations on the role of various metal oxides as pro-oxidants on the degradation of ionomer compatibilized LDPE-starch blends are reported in chapter 6. Chapter 7 deals with the results of investigations on the role of various metal stearates as pro-oxidants on the degradation of ionomer compatibilized LDPE-starch blends. The conclusion of the investigations is presented in the last chapter of the thesis. |

Abstract: | Light emitting polymers (LEPs) are considered as the second generation of conducting polymers. A Prototype LEP device based on electroluminescence emission of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) was first assembled in 1990. LEPs have progressed tremendously over the past 20 years. The development of new LEP derivatives are important because polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) can be used for the manufacture of next-generation displays and other optoelectronic applications such as lasers, photovoltaic cells and sensors. Under this circumstance, it is important to understand thermal, structural, morphological, electrochemical and photophysical characteristics of luminescent polymers. In this thesis the author synthesizes a series of light emitting polymers that can emit three primary colors (RGB) with high efficiency |

Abstract: | Use of short fibers as reinforcing fillers in rubber composites is on an increasing trend. They are popular due to the possibility of obtaining anisotropic properties, ease of processing and economy. In the preparation of these composites short fibers are incorporated on two roll mixing mills or in internal mixers. This is a high energy intensive time consuming process. This calls for developing less energy intensive and less time consuming processes for incorporation and distribution of short fibers in the rubber matrix. One method for this is to incorporate fibers in the latex stage. The present study is primarily to optimize the preparation of short fiber- natural rubber composite by latex stage compounding and to evaluate the resulting composites in terms of mechanical, dynamic mechanical and thermal properties. A synthetic fiber (Nylon) and a natural fiber (Coir) are used to evaluate the advantages of the processing through latex stage. To extract the full reinforcing potential of the coir fibers the macro fibers are converted to micro fibers through chemical and mechanical means. The thesis is presented in 7 chapters |

Abstract: | LLDPE was blended with poly (vinyl alcohol) and mechanical, thermal, spectroscopic properties and biodegradability were investigated. The biodegradability of LLDPE/PVA blends has been studied in two environments, viz. (1) a culture medium containing Vibrio sp. and (2) a soil environment over a period of 15 weeks. Nanoanatase having photo catalytic activity was synthesized by hydrothermal method using titanium-iso-propoxide. The synthesized TiO2 was characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), BET studies, FTIR studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystallite size of titania was calculated to be ≈ 6nm from the XRD results and the surface area was found to be about 310m2/g by BET method. SEM shows that nanoanatase particles prepared by this method are spherical in shape. Linear low density polyethylene films containing polyvinyl alcohol and a pro-oxidant (TiO2 or cobalt stearate with or without vegetable oil) were prepared. The films were then subjected to natural weathering and UV exposure followed by biodegradation in culture medium as well as in soil environment. The degradation was monitored by mechanical property measurements, thermal studies, rate of weight loss, FTIR and SEM studies. Higher weight loss, texture change and greater increments in carbonyl index values were observed in samples containing cobalt stearate and vegetable oil. The present study demonstrates that the combination of LLDPE/PVA blends with (I) nanoanatase/vegetable oil and (ii) cobalt stearate/vegetable oil leads to extensive photodegradation. These samples show substantial degradation when subsequent exposure to Vibrio sp. is made. Thus a combined photodegradation and biodegradation process is a promising step towards obtaining a biodegradable grade of LLDPE. |

Abstract: | There exists a need for potential microorganism that could facilitate effective bioremediation of crude oil pollutants in the environment. Hence it was desired to isolate a potential bacterium from marine sediment, which often experiences oil pollution and develop a bioprocess for crude oil biodegradation. In the present study the sediment deposits in the beach of Munakkal, Trichur dist, Kerala, collected immediately after the major event Tsunami in 2004 was collected and analyzed by enrichment culture technique towards isolation of potential strains that could degrade crude oil and its fractions. From the results obtained it was found that the sediment deposits harbor several bacteria with potential for degrading hydrocarbons. However, among the strains obtained, isolate no. BTTS 10 showed capabilities for utilizing both alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons and hence the same was selected for further studies. |

Abstract: | The search for new materials especially those possessing special properties continues at a great pace because of ever growing demands of the modern life. The focus on the use of intrinsically conductive polymers in organic electronic devices has led to the development of a totally new class of smart materials. Polypyrrole (PPy) is one of the most stable known conducting polymers and also one of the easiest to synthesize. In addition, its high conductivity, good redox reversibility and excellent microwave absorbing characteristics have led to the existence of wide and diversified applications for PPy. However, as any conjugated conducting polymer, PPy lacks processability, flexibility and strength which are essential for industrial requirements. Among various approaches to making tractable materials based on PPy, incorporating PPy within an electrically insulating polymer appears to be a promising method, and this has triggered the development of blends or composites. Conductive elastomeric composites of polypyrrole are important in that they are composite materials suitable for devices where flexibility is an important parameter. Moreover these composites can be moulded into complex shapes. In this work an attempt has been made to prepare conducting elastomeric composites by the incorporation of PPy and PPy coated short Nylon-6 fiber with insulating elastomer matrices- natural rubber and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber. It is well established that mechanical properties of rubber composites can be greatly improved by adding short fibers. Generally short fiber reinforced rubber composites are popular in industrial fields because of their processing advantages, low cost, and their greatly improved technical properties such as strength, stiffness, modulus and damping. In the present work, PPy coated fiber is expected to improve the mechanical properties of the elastomer-PPy composites, at the same time increasing the conductivity. In addition to determination of DC conductivity and evaluation of mechanical properties, the work aims to study the thermal stability, dielectric properties and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of the composites. The thesis consists of ten chapters. |

Abstract: | The present study was designed to investigate the protective effect of curcumin and vitamin D3 in the functional regulation of glutamatergic NMDA and AMPA receptors in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Alterations in glutamatergic neurotransmission in the brain were evaluated by analyzing the glutamate content, glutamate receptors - NMDA and AMPA receptors binding parameters and gene expression, GAD and GLAST gene expression. Immunohistochemistry studies using confocal microscope were carried out to confirm receptor density and gene expression results of NMDA and AMPA receptors. The role of glutamatergic receptors in pancreas was studied using the following parameters; glutamate content, GLAST expression, glutamate receptors - NMDA and AMPA receptor binding and gene expression. Increasing evidence in both experimental and clinical studies suggests that oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of diabetes. In the present study SOD assay and GPx gene expression were done to evaluate the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the brain regions and pancreas. NeuroD1 and Pdx1 gene expression were performed in pancreas of experimental rats to evaluate pancreatic islet survival. Gene expression profiles of caspase 8, Bax, and Akt in brain regions and pancreas were studied to understand the possible mechanism behind curcumin and vitamin D3 mediated neuroprotection and islet survival. Gene expression studies of vitamin D3 receptor localisation in the pancreas was done to understand the mechanism of vitamin D3 in insulin secretion. Curcumin and vitamin D3 mediated insulin secretion via Ca2+ release were studied using confocal microscope. |

Abstract: | The motion instability is an important issue that occurs during the operation of towed underwater vehicles (TUV), which considerably affects the accuracy of high precision acoustic instrumentations housed inside the same. Out of the various parameters responsible for this, the disturbances from the tow-ship are the most significant one. The present study focus on the motion dynamics of an underwater towing system with ship induced disturbances as the input. The study focus on an innovative system called two-part towing. The methodology involves numerical modeling of the tow system, which consists of modeling of the tow-cables and vehicles formulation. Previous study in this direction used a segmental approach for the modeling of the cable. Even though, the model was successful in predicting the heave response of the tow-body, instabilities were observed in the numerical solution. The present study devises a simple approach called lumped mass spring model (LMSM) for the cable formulation. In this work, the traditional LMSM has been modified in two ways. First, by implementing advanced time integration procedures and secondly, use of a modified beam model which uses only translational degrees of freedoms for solving beam equation. A number of time integration procedures, such as Euler, Houbolt, Newmark and HHT-α were implemented in the traditional LMSM and the strength and weakness of each scheme were numerically estimated. In most of the previous studies, hydrodynamic forces acting on the tow-system such as drag and lift etc. are approximated as analytical expression of velocities. This approach restricts these models to use simple cylindrical shaped towed bodies and may not be applicable modern tow systems which are diversed in shape and complexity. Hence, this particular study, hydrodynamic parameters such as drag and lift of the tow-system are estimated using CFD techniques. To achieve this, a RANS based CFD code has been developed. Further, a new convection interpolation scheme for CFD simulation, called BNCUS, which is blend of cell based and node based formulation, was proposed in the study and numerically tested. To account for the fact that simulation takes considerable time in solving fluid dynamic equations, a dedicated parallel computing setup has been developed. Two types of computational parallelisms are explored in the current study, viz; the model for shared memory processors and distributed memory processors. In the present study, shared memory model was used for structural dynamic analysis of towing system, distributed memory one was devised in solving fluid dynamic equations. |

Abstract: | Given the economic importance of Jatropha curcas, and its limited availability in the wild, it would be desirable to establish plantations ofthe tree so as to obtain assured supply of raw material for extraction of phytochemicals, and seeds for production of biodiesel. However both seed propagation as well as propagation by cuttings is unsatisfactory in this tree species. Seeds have poor viability and are genetically heterozygous leading to genetic variability in terms of growth, biomass, seed yield, and oil content. Stern cuttings have poor roots and the trees are easily uprooted. Tissue culture techniques could possibly be gainfully employed in the propagation of elite plants ofJaIropha. When plant tissue is passaged through in vitro culture, there is possibility of induction of variations. An estimation of somaclonal variability is useful in a determination of culture protocols. Molecular markers could be employed to estimate the amount of variations induced in callus and regenerants by different honnonal combinations used in culture. In this context the present study aims to develop an in vitro propagation protocol for the production of plantlets and to evaluate the variation induced in callus and regenerants in comparison with mother plant by the use of molecular markers and by studying phytochemicals and bio active compounds present in callus and regenerated plants |
