| Abstract: | The title of the study is ''Toxicology Literature: An Informetric Analysis".In the field of Toxicology, the interdisciplinary research resulted in 'information fragmentation' of the basic subject to environmental, medical and economic toxicology. The interest in collaborative research resulted in the transdisciplinary growth of Toxicology which ultimately resulted in the scatter of literature.For the purpose of present study Toxicology is defined as the physical and chemical aspects of all poisons affecting environmental, economical and medical aspects of human life. Informetrics is "the use and development of a variety of measures to study and analyse several properties of information in general and documents in particular."The present study fled light on the main fields of Toxicology research as well as the important primary journals through which the results are being published. Short-pulse high-intensity lasers are able to accelerate protons and heavier ions to multi-MeV energies during their interaction with solid targets, gas jets and clusters. When such a laser radiation is focused at the intensity above 10” Wcm'2, local electric field strength will be almost equivalent to that within an atom. Hence, new nonlinear optical phenomena will be expected in the field of light matter interaction. | Abstract: | Liquid Crystalline DNA is emerging as an active area of research, due to its potential applications in diverse fields, ranging from nanoelectronics to therapeutics. Since, counter ion neutralization is an essential requirement for the expression of LC DNA, and the present level of understanding on the LC phase behavior of high molecular weight DNA is inadequate, a thorough investigation is required to understand the nature and stability of these phases under the influence of various cationic species. The present study is, therefore mainly focused on a comparative investigation of the effect of metal ions of varying charge, size, hydration and binding modes on the LC phase behavior of high molecular weight DNA. The main objectives of the works are investigations on the induction and stabilization of LC phases of high molecular weight DNA by alkali metal ions, investigations on the induction and stabilization of LC phases of high molecular weight DNA by alkaline earth metal ions, effects of multivalent, transition and heavy metal ions on the LC phase behavior of high molecular weight DNA and investigations on spermine induced LC behavior of high molecular weight DNA in the presence of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions. The critical DNA concentration (CD) required for the expression of LC phases, phase transitions and their stability varied considerably when the binding site of the metal ions changed from phosphate groups to the nitrogenous bases of DNA, with Li+ giving the highest stability. Multiple LC phases with different textures, sometimes diffused and unstable or otherwise mainly distinct and clear, were observed on mixing metal ions with DNA solutions, which in turn depended on the charge, size, hydration factor, binding modes, concentration of the metal ions and time. Molecular modeling studies on binding of selected metal ions to DNA supported the experimental findings |

| Abstract: | Cast Ai-Si alloys are widely used in the automotive, aerospace and general engineering industries due to their excellent combination of properties such as good castability, low coefficient of thermal expansion, high strength-to-weight ratio and good corrosion resistance. The present investigation is on the influence of alloying additions on the structure and properties of Ai-7Si-0.3Mg alloy. The primary objective of this present investigation is to study these beneficial effects of calcium on the structure and properties of Ai-7Si-0.3Mg-xFe alloys. The second objective of this work is to study the effects of Mn,Be and Sr addition as Fe neutralizers and also to study the interaction of Mn,Be,Sr and Ca in Ai-7Si-0.3Mg-xFe alloys. In this study the duel beneficial effects of Ca viz;modification and Fe-neutralization, comparison of the effects of Ca and Sr with common Fe neutralizers. The casting have been characterized with respect to their microstructure, %porosity and electrical conductivity, solidification behaviour and mechanical properties. One of the interesting observations in the present work is that a low level of calcium reduces the porosity compared to the untreated alloy. However higher level of calcium addition lead to higher porosity in the casting. An empirical analysis carried out for comparing the results of the present work with those of the other researchers on the effect of increasing iron content on UTS and % elongation of Ai-Si-Mg and Ai-Si-Cu alloys has shown a linear and an inverse first order polynomial relationships respectively. |

| Abstract: | Biodegradable polymers have opened an emerging area of great interest because they are the ultimate solution for the disposal problems of synthetic polymers used for short time applications in the environmental and biomedical field. The biodegradable polymers available until recently have a number of limitations in terms of strength and dimensional stability. Most of them have processing problems and are also very expensive. Recent developments in biodegradable polymers show that monomers and polymers obtained from renewable resources are important owing to their inherent biodegradability, biocompatibility and easy availability. The present study is, therefore, mostly concemed with the utilization of renewable resources by effecting chemical modification/copolymerization on existing synthetic polymers/natural polymers for introducing better biodegradability and material properties.The thesis describes multiple approaches in the design of new biodegradable polymers: (1) Chemical modification of an existing nonbiodegradable polymer, polyethylene, by anchoring monosaccharides after functionalization to introduce biodegradability. (2) Copolymerization of an existing biodegradable polymer, polylactide, with suitable monomers and/or polymers to tailor their properties to suit the emerging requirements such as (2a) graft copolymerization of lactide onto chitosan to get controlled solvation and biodegradability and (2b) copolymerization of polylactide with cycloaliphatic amide segments to improve upon the thermal properties and processability. |

| Abstract: | The present work is to impart radiopacity in various natural polymers like chitosan, natural rubber and derivatives of chitosan and to characterize it. This thesis collated the radiopaque properties of these radiopaque polymers and various technological applications in the medical field. The applications of radiopaque polymers leads to an exploitation of radiopaque properties like X-ray visibility, optical density, effective atomic number, attenuation coefficient of biopolymers like chitosan, chitosan formate, chitosan acetate, carboxy methyl chitosan and natural rubber. The radiopaqe properties of these materials highly depend upon the size, shape, amount of radiopacifier and crystallinity of the radiopaque material. Radiopaque chitosan microspheres were prepared by cross linking with glutaraldehyde followed by the encapsulation of barium sulpahte. The effect of different emulsion systems on the morphology of chitosan microspheres were studied. The study concentrates radiopaque natural rubber for shielding applications. It reveals that to improve the particle size, morphology and crystalline phase of the zinc oxide particles, a novel method for the preparation of zinc oxide is adopted. A detailed radiopacity study was done in natural rubber containing 100phr precipitated zinc oxide prepared from different zinc salts. One of the significant findings of this investigation is that NR vulcanizates containing precipitated zinc oxide (from zinc acetate) shows higher attenuation coefficient. These interesting findings reveal the applications of these natural radiopaque systems in various fields like surgical tools, medical tubings, catheters, radiation shielding,etc. |

| Abstract: | The rapid developments in fields such as fibre optic communication engineering and integrated optical electronics have expanded the interest and have increased the expectations about guided wave optics, in which optical waveguides and optical fibres play a central role. The technology of guided wave photonics now plays a role in generating information (guided-wave sensors) and processing information (spectral analysis, analog-to-digital conversion and other optical communication schemes) in addition to its original application of transmitting information (fibre optic communication). Passive and active polymer devices have generated much research interest recently because of the versatility of the fabrication techniques and the potential applications in two important areas – short distant communication network and special functionality optical devices such as amplifiers, switches and sensors. Polymer optical waveguides and fibres are often designed to have large cores with 10-1000 micrometer diameter to facilitate easy connection and splicing. Large diameter polymer optical fibres being less fragile and vastly easier to work with than glass fibres, are attractive in sensing applications. Sensors using commercial plastic optical fibres are based on ideas already used in silica glass sensors, but exploiting the flexible and cost effective nature of the plastic optical fibre for harsh environments and throw-away sensors. In the field of Photonics, considerable attention is centering on the use of polymer waveguides and fibres, as they have a great potential to create all-optical devices. By attaching organic dyes to the polymer system we can incorporate a variety of optical functions. Organic dye doped polymer waveguides and fibres are potential candidates for solid state gain media. High power and high gain optical amplification in organic dye-doped polymer waveguide amplifier is possible due to extremely large emission cross sections of dyes. Also, an extensive choice of organic dye dopants is possible resulting in amplification covering a wide range in the visible region. |

| Abstract: | Plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (pPVC), although a major player in the medical field, is at present facing lot of criticism due to some of its limitations like the leaching out of the toxic plasticizer, di ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) to the medium and the emission of an environmental pollutant,dioxin gas,at the time of the post use disposal of PVC Products by incineration. Due to these reasons, efforts are on to reduce the use of pPVC considerably in the medical field and to find viable alternative materials. The present study has been undertaken in this context to find a suitable material for the manufacture of medical aids in place of pPVC. The main focus of this study has been to find out a non-DEHP material as plasticizer for pPVC and another suitable material for the complete repalcement of pPVC for blood/ blood component storage applications.Two approaches have been undertaken for this purpose-(1)the controversial plasticizer, DEHP has been partially replaced by polymeric plasticizers(2) an alternative material, namely, metallocene polyolefin (mPO) has been used and suitably modified to match the properties of flexible PVC used for blood and blood component storage applications. |

| Abstract: | The present study deals with the short isora fibre reinforced natural rubber composites. In recent years there has been a tremendous advancement in the field of science and technology of short fibre reinforced polymer composites. The low density, high strength, high stiffness to weight ratio, excellent durability and design flexibility are the primary reasons for their use in many diversified fields such as air crafts, automobiles, marine industry etc. Compared to the various natural and synthetic fibres used as reinforcement for elastomer composites isora fibre is superior in many aspects. `Isora' is a natural lignocellulosic fibre which is easily available in South India especially in Kerala. The fibre is separated from the bark of the Helicteres isora plant by retting process. This fibre has excellent mechanical properties and is easily amenable to physical and chemical modifications. The study shows that composites with poor interfacial bonding tend to dissipate more energy than that with to interfacial bonding. The mechanical loss also can be related to interfacial bonding. The effect of chemical treatment of isora fibre on damping was also studied. Both in the low and high temperature region which indicates that this composite posseses low damping and hence good interfacial bonding characteristics. Hence these composites are better candidates for high damping applications. Composites with longitudinally oriented fibres showed high storage modulus than transversely oriented ones due to the effective stress transfer between fibre and matrix. |

| Abstract: | The thesis presented the fabrication and characterisation of polymer optical fibers in their applications as optical amplifier and smart sensors.Optical polymers such as PMMA are found to be a very good host material due to their ability to incorporate very high concentration of optical gain media like fluorescent dyes and rare earth compounds. High power and high gain optical amplification in organic dye-doped polymer optical fibers is possible due to extremely large emission cross sections of oyes. Dye doped (Rhodamine 6G) optical fibers were fabricated by using indigenously developed polymer optical fiber drawing tower. Loss characterization of drawn dye doped fibers was carried out using side illumination technique. The advantage of the above technique is that it is a nondestructive method and can also be used for studying the uniformity in fiber diameter and doping. Sensitivity of the undoped polymer fibers to temperature and microbending were also studied in its application in smart sensors.Optical amplification studies using the dye doped polymer optical fibers were carried out and found that an amplification of l8dB could be achieved using a very short fiber of length lOcm. Studies were carried out in fibers with different dye concentrations and diameter and it was observed that gain stability was achieved at relatively high dye concentrations irrespective of the fiber diameter.Due to their large diameter, large numerical aperture, flexibility and geometrical versatility of polymer optical fibers it has a wide range of applications in the field of optical sensing. Just as in the case of conventional silica based fiber optic sensors, sensing techniques like evanescent wave, grating and other intensity modulation schemes can also be efficiently utilized in the case of POF based sensors. Since polymer optical fibers have very low Young's modulus when compared to glass fibers, it can be utilized for sensing mechanical stress and strain efficiently in comparison with its counterpart. Fiber optic sensors have proved themselves as efficient and reliable devices to sense various parameters like aging, crack formation, weathering in civil structures. A similar type of study was carried out to find the setting characteristics of cement paste used for constructing civil structures. It was found that the measurements made by using fiber optic sensors are far more superior than that carried out by conventional methods. More over,POF based sensors were found to have more sensitivity as well. |

| Abstract: | In the present studies it is clear that Bacillus pumilus xylanase is having the characteristic suited for an industrial enzyme (xylanases that are active and stable at elevated temperatures and alkaline pH are needed). SSF production of xylanases and its application appears to be an innovative technology where the fermented substrate is the enzyme source that is used directly in the bleaching process without a prior downstream processing. The direct use of SSF enzymes in bleaching is a relatively new biobleaching approach. This can certainly benefit the bleaching process to lower the xylanase production costs and improve the economics and viability of the biobleaching technology. The application of enzymes to the bleaching process has been considered as an environmentally friendly approach that can reduce the negative impact on the environment exerted by the use of chlorine-based bleaching agents. It has been demonstrated that pretreatment of kraft pulp with xylanase prior to bleaching (biobleaching) can facilitate subsequent removal of lignin by bleaching chemicals, thereby, reducing the demand for elemental chlorine or improving final paper brightness. Using this xylanase pre-treatment, has resulted in an increased of brightness (8.5 Unit) when compared to non-enzymatic treated bleached pulp prepared using identical conditions. Reduction of the consumption of active chlorine can be achieved which results in a decrease in the toxicity, colour, chloride and absorbable organic halogen (AOX) levels of bleaching effluents. The xylanase treatment improves drainage, strength properties and the fragility of pulps, and also increases the brightness of pulps. This positive result shows that enzyme pre-treatment facilitates the removal of chromophore fragments of pulp there by making the process more environment friendly |

| Abstract: | In this thesis, we explore the design, computation, and experimental analysis of photonic crystals, with a special emphasis on structures and devices that make a connection with practically realizable systems. First, we analyze the propenies of photonic-crystal: periodic dielectric structures that have a band gap for propagation. The band gap of periodically loaded air column on a dielectric substrate is computed using Eigen solvers in a plane wave basis. Then this idea is extended to planar filters and antennas at microwave regime. The main objectives covered in this thesis are:• Computation of Band Gap origin in Photonic crystal with the abet of Maxwell's equation and Bloch-Floquet's theorem • Extension of Band Gap to Planar structures at microwave regime • Predict the dielectric constant - synthesized dieletric cmstant of the substrates when loaded with Photonic Band Gap (PBG) structures in a microstrip transmission line • Identify the resonant characteristic of the PBG cell and extract the equivalent circuit based on PBG cell and substrate parameters for microstrip transmission line • Miniaturize PBG as Defected Ground Structures (DGS) and use the property to be implemented in planar filters with microstrip transmission line • Extended the band stop effect of PBG / DGS to coplanar waveguide and asymmetric coplanar waveguide. • Formulate design equations for the PBG / DGS filters • Use these PBG / DGS ground plane as ground plane of microstrip antennas • Analysis of filters and antennas using FDID method |

| Abstract: | A detailed study of the blends of ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) and chlorobutyl rubber (CIIR) is proposed in this study. These blends may find application in the manufacture of curing diaphragms/curing envelopes for tire curing applications. EPDM possesses better physical properties such as high heat resistance, ozone resistance, cold and moisture resistance, high resistance to permanent defonnation, very good resistance to flex cracking and impact. Because of the low gas and moisture penneability, good weathering resistance and high thermal stability of CIIR, blends of EPDM with CIlR may be attractive, if sufficient mechanical strength can be developed. Although a lot of work has been done on elastomer blends, studies on the blends of EPDM and CIIR rubbers are meagre. Hence in this investigation it is proposed to make a systematic study on the characteristics of EPDM and CIIR rubber blends.The mechanical and physical properties of an elastomer blend depend mainly on the blend compatibility. So in the first part of the study, it is proposed to develop compatible blends of EPDM with CIIR. Various commercial grades of ethylenepropylene- diene rubber are proposed to be blended with a specific grade of chlorobutyl rubber at varying proportions. The extent of compatibility in these blends is proposed to be evaluated based on their mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength and ageing resistance. In addition to the physical property measurements, blend compatibility is also proposed to be studied based on the glass transition behavlour of the blends in relation to the Tg's of the individual components using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). The phase morphology of the blends is also proposed to be investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies of the tensile fracture surfaces. In the case of incompatible blends, the effect of addition of chlorosulfonated polyethylene as a compatibiliser is also proposed to be investigated.In the second part of the study, the effect of sulphur curing and resin curing on the curing behaviour and the vulcanizate properties of EPDM/CIIR blends are planned to be evaluated. Since the properties of rubber vulcanizates are determined by their network structures, it is proposed to determine the network structure of the vulcanizates by chemical probes so as to correlate it with the mechanical properties.In the third part of the work, the effect of partial precuring of one of the components prior to blending as a possible means of improving the properties of the blend is proposed to be investigated. This procedure may also help to bring down the viscosity mismatch between the constituent e1astomers and provide covulcanization of the blend.The rheological characteristics and processability of the blends are proposed to be investigated in the last part of the study. To explore their possible applications, the air permeability of the blend samples at varying temperatures is proposed to be measured. The thermal diffusivity behaviour of EPDM/CIlR blends is also proposed to be investigated using novel laser technique. The thermal diffusivity of the blends along with the thermal degradation resistance may help to determine whether the blends are suitable for high temperature applications such as in the manufacturing of curing envelope. |

| Abstract: | The aim of the investigation is to develop new high performance adhesive systems based on neoprene-phenolic blends. Initially the effect of addition of all possible ingredients like fillers, adhesion promoters, curing agents and their optimum compositions to neoprene solution is investigated. The phenolic resin used is a copolymer of phenol-cardanolformaldehyde prepared in the laboratory. The optimum ratio between phenol and cardanol that gives the maximum bond strength in metal-metal, rubber-rubber and rubber-metal specimens has been identified. Further the ratio between total phenols and formaldehyde is also optimised. The above adhesive system is further modified by the addition of epoxidized phenolic novolacs. For this purpose, phenolic novolac resins are prepared in different stoichiometric ratios and are subsequently epoxidized. The effectiveness of the adhesive for bonding different metal and rubber substrates is another part of the study. To study the ageing behaviour, different bonded specimens are exposed to high temperature, hot water and salt water and adhesive properties have been evaluated. The synthesized resins have been characterized by FTIR , HNMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights of the resins have been obtained by GPC. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry are used to study the thermal properties. The fractured surface analysis is studied by scanning electron microscopy. The study has brought to light the influence of phenol/ formaldehyde stoichiometric ratio, addition of cardanol (a renewable resource), adhesion promoters and suitability of the adhesive for different substrates and the age resistance of adhesive joints among other things. |

| Abstract: | The current research investigates the possibility of using single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as filler in polymers to impart several properties to the matrix polymer. SWNTs in a polymer matrix like poly(ethylene terephthalate) induce nucleation in its melt crystallization, provide effective reinforcement and impart electrical conductivity. We adopt a simple melt compounding technique for incorporating the nanotubes into the polymer matrix. For attaining a better dispersion of the filler, an ultrasound assisted dissolution-evaporation method has also been tried. The resulting enhancement in the materials properties indicates an improved disentanglement of the nanotube ropes, which in turn provides effective matrix-filler interaction. PET-SWNT nanocomposite fibers prepared through melt spinning followed by subsequent drawing are also found to have significantly higher mechanical propertiesas compared to pristine PET fiber.SWNTs also find applications in composites based on elastomers such as natural rubber as they can impart electrical conductivity with simultaneous improvement in the mechanical properties. |

| Abstract: | This research project aims at developing new applications for CNSL in the polymer field. Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) is a cheap agro-byproduct and renewable resource which consists mainly of substituted phenols. By using CNSL in place of phenol, phenol derived from petrochemicals can be conserved and a cheap agro-byproduct utilized.In this study CNSL based resin is prepared by condensing a mixture of phenol and CNSL with hexamethylenetetramine and the effect of P: F ratio and CNSL: P ratio on the properties of synthesized resin is studied. The adhesive properties of CNSL based resin in combination with neoprene rubber are investigated. The effect of varying the stoichiometric ratios between total phenol and formaldehyde and CNSL and phenol of the resin, resin content, choice and extent of fillers and adhesion promoters in the adhesive formulation are studied. The effect of resin on the ageing properties of various elastomers is also studied by following changes in tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus, tear strength, swelling index and acetone soluble matter. Crude CNSL and resins with different P: F ratios and CNSL: P ratios are incorporated into elastomers. Lastly, utility of CNSL based resin as binder for making particleboard is investigated.The results show that CNSL based resin is an effective ingredient in adhesives for bonding aluminium to aluminium. The resin used for adhesive fonnulation gives the best performance at 45 to 55 phr resin and a total phenol: formaldehyde of l:2.9. The resin when added at a rate of l5 phr improves ageing characteristics of elastomers with respect to mechanical properties. The reaction mixture of CNSL and hexa and the resin resulting from the condensation of CN SL, phenol and hexa can be used as effective binders for moulding particleboard. |

Electrical properties of biological tissues and their interaction with electromagmetic waves have direct impact on human life. This thesis focuses on theoretical and experimental investigations of active microwave imaging techniques for breast cancer detection. |
