Abstract: | Fluorescence of BaS: Sm phosphor has been studied using a pulsed Nitrogen laser (337.1 nm) as the excitation source. The spectrum consists of a broad band in the region 540–660nm superposed by the characteristic Sm3+ lines. Energy level splitting pattern of Sm3+ due to crystal field effects has been calculated and relevent field parameters are evaluated. Analysis shows that Sm3+ takes up Ba2+ substitutional sites. |

Abstract: | In this paper we report the use of a laser induced phoroacoustic technique for the detection of multiple phase transitions in heptyl-oxy-cyanobiphenyl (70CB) and octyl-oxy-cyanobiphenyl (80CB) liquid crystals. The observed photoacoustic signal amplitude profile carries clear signatures of two tirst order transitions in 70CB and two tirst order and a second order transitions in 80CB. Analysis of the experimental data using Rosencwaig-Gersho theory shows that the sudden decrease in the photoacoustic (PA) signal amplitude during phase transitions is due to a sharp increase in the heat capacity of the samples near the transition temperatures. |

Abstract: | N-alkyl-2,6-dimethyl-4(1H)-pyridinones, salts of 4-dimethylaminopyridine and 2-amino-5-nitropyridine are considered to be potential candidates for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications, in particular for the generation of blue-green laser radiation. Single crystals were grown following the slow evaporation technique at constant temperature. Single-shot laserinduced surface damage thresholds in the range 3–10 GW/cm2 were measured using a 18 ns Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The surface morphologies of the damaged crystals were examined under an optical microscope and the nature of damage identified. The Vicker’s microhardness was determined at a load of 98.07 mN. The thermal transport properties, thermal diffusivity (α), thermal effusivity (e), thermal conductivity (K) and heat capacity (Cp), of the grown crystals were measured by an improved photopyroelectric technique at room temperature. All the results are presented and discussed. |

Abstract: | In this paper, we report the measurements of thermal diffusivity of nano Ag metal dispersed ceramic alumina matrix sintered at different temperatures using laser induced non-destructive photoacoustic technique. Measurements of thermal diffusivity also have been carried out on specimens with various concentration of nano metal. Analysis of the data is done on the basis of one-dimensional model of Rosencwaig and Gersho. The present measurements on the thermal diffusivity of nano metal dispersed ceramic alumina shows that porosity has a great influence on the heat transport and the thermal diffusivity value. The present analysis also shows that the inclusion of nano metal into ceramic matrix increases its interconnectivity and hence the thermal diffusivity value. The present study on the samples sintered at different temperature shows that the porosity of the ceramics varies considerably with the change in sintering temperature. The results are interpreted in terms of phonon assisted heat transfer mechanism and the exclusion of pores with the increase in sintering temperature. |

Abstract: | Lead free magneto electrics with a strong sub resonant (broad frequency range) magneto electric coupling coefficient (MECC) is the goal of the day which can revolutionise the microelectronics and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) industry. We report giant resonant MECC in lead free nanograined Barium Titanate–CoFe (Alloy)-Barium Titanate [BTO-CoFe-BTO] sandwiched thin films. The resonant MECC values obtained here are the highest values recorded in thin films/ multilayers. Sub-resonant MECC values are quite comparable to the highest MECC reported in 2-2 layered structures. MECC got enhanced by two orders at a low frequency resonance. The results show the potential of these thin films for transducer, magnetic field assisted energy harvesters, switching devices, and storage applications. Some possible device integration techniques are also discussed |

Abstract: | Learning Disability (LD) is a neurological condition that affects a child’s brain and impairs his ability to carry out one or many specific tasks. LD affects about 15 % of children enrolled in schools. The prediction of LD is a vital and intricate job. The aim of this paper is to design an effective and powerful tool, using the two intelligent methods viz., Artificial Neural Network and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, for measuring the percentage of LD that affected in school-age children. In this study, we are proposing some soft computing methods in data preprocessing for improving the accuracy of the tool as well as the classifier. The data preprocessing is performed through Principal Component Analysis for attribute reduction and closest fit algorithm is used for imputing missing values. The main idea in developing the LD prediction tool is not only to predict the LD present in children but also to measure its percentage along with its class like low or minor or major. The system is implemented in Mathworks Software MatLab 7.10. The results obtained from this study have illustrated that the designed prediction system or tool is capable of measuring the LD effectively |

Abstract: | Housing is one of the primary human needs. It is second only to the need for food and clothing. From a macro perspective, housing is an industry that can prove itself to be a growth engine for a nation, particularly a developing nation like India. Housing has been one of the top priorities for the various governments in India since the seventies. The need for housing has been increasing at a phenomenal pace in India and so also the need for housing finance. Since the growth in supply of housing could not keep pace with the growth in its demand, housing shortage has been on the rise over the years. Housing finance industry which was relatively dormant till the early nineties underwent sweeping changes ever since the initiation of financial sector deregulation measures. Financial deregulation measures brought about several changes in this industry, the first and foremost being the fast growth rate in the industry coupled with cutthroat competition among the industry players. This trend has been quite prominent since the entry of commercial banks into this arena. Accordingly, there has been a surge in the growth of retail (personal) loans segment, particularly in respect of housing loans. This is evident from the fact that housing loans disbursed by banks as a percentage of their total loans has increased from just 2.79% as of end-March 1997 to as high as 12.52% as of end-March 2007. Thus, there has been an unprecedented growth rate in the disbursement of housing loans by banks, and as of 31 March 2007 the outstanding balance of housing loans by all banks in India stands at Rs.230689 Crore, as against just Rs.7946 Crore as of 31 March 1997, the growth rate being 35.82 %CAGR (for the eleven years’ period, FY 1997-‘2007). However, in spite of the impressive growth in housing finance over the years, there are growing apprehensions regarding its inclusiveness, i.e. accessibility to the common man, the underprivileged sections of the society to housing finance etc. Of late, it is widely recognized that formal housing finance system, particularly the commercial banks (CBs) – most dominant among the players – is fast becoming exclusive in operations, with nearly 90% of the total housing credit going to the rich and upper middle income group, primarily the salaried class. The case of housing finance companies (HFCs) is quite similar in this regard. The poor and other marginalized sections are often deprived of adequate credit facilities for housing purpose. Studies have revealed that urban housing poverty is much more acute than the rural probably because of the very fast process of urbanization coupled with constant rural to urban migration |

Abstract: | The length – weight relationship and relative condition factor of the shovel nose catfish, Arius subrostratus (Valenciennes, 1840) from Champakkara backwater were studied by examination of 392 specimens collected during June to September 2008. These fishes ranged from 6 to 29 cm in total length and 5.6 to 218 g in weight. The relation between the total length and weight of Arius subrostratus is described as Log W = -1.530+2.6224 log L for males, Log W = - 2.131 + 3.0914 log L for females and Log W = - 1.742 + 2.8067 log L for sexes combined. The mean relative condition factor (Kn) values ranged from 0.75 to 1.07 for males, 0.944 to 1.407 for females and 0.96 to 1.196 for combined sexes. The length-weight relationship and relative condition factor showed that the well-being of A. subrostratus is good. The morphometric measurements of various body parts and meristic counts were recorded. The morphometric measurements were found to be non-linear and there is no significant difference observed between the two sexes. From the present investigation, the fin formula can be written as D: I, 7; P: I, 12; A: 17 – 20; C: 26 – 32. There is no change in meristic counts with the increase in body length. |

Abstract: | Axial brain slices containing similar anatomical structures are retrieved using features derived from the histogram of Local binary pattern (LBP). A rotation invariant description of texture in terms of texture patterns and their strength is obtained with the incorporation of local variance to the LBP, called Modified LBP (MOD-LBP). In this paper, we compare Histogram based Features of LBP (HF/LBP), against Histogram based Features of MOD-LBP (HF/MOD-LBP) in retrieving similar axial brain images. We show that replacing local histogram with a local distance transform based similarity metric further improves the performance of MOD-LBP based image retrieval |

Abstract: | The Lewis acidity of yttrium and dysprosium exchanged zeolite Y and ZSM-5 has been determined by titration method using Hammett indicators. The acidity of the Y form increases with increase in concentration of the rare earth cation in the Y zeolite. It is independent of the amount of the rare earth ion for ZSM-5. The data have been correlated with the activity of these zeolites for the esterification of butanol using acetic acid. |

Abstract: | Extracellular L-glutaminase production by Beau6eria sp., isolated from marine sediment, was observed during solid state fermentation using polystyrene as an inert support. Maximal enzyme production (49.89 U:ml) occurred at pH 9.0, 27°C, in a seawater based medium supplemented with L-glutamine (0.25% w:v) as substrate and D-glucose (0.5% w:v) as additional carbon source, after 96 h of incubation. Enzyme production was growth associated. Results indicate scope for production of salt tolerant L-glutaminase using this marine fungus |

Abstract: | We report unusual spectral narrowing and laser emission from polymer thin films doped with Coumarin 540 dye. The laser emission from the polymer films is found to be highly dependent upon the excitation length of the medium. Even a short length of 1.75 mm of the dye doped film gave rise to laser emission with FWHM of 0.3 nm for a pump intensity of 825 kW cm−2. The partial reflections from the broad lateral surfaces of the free standing films provided the optical feedback for the laser emission. Occurrence of well-resolved equally spaced resonant modes confirmed the effect of a Fabry–Perot-like optical cavity between the film surfaces. |

Abstract: | Coir pith black liquor obtained as a dark brown filtrate from oxidative delignification needs to be decolourised before releasing to open environment. From this liquor industrially valuable lignin was recovered using acid precipitation method. ‘Biochar’ was produced by slow pyrolysis of coir pith at 500oC and 600oC. Water holding capacity and pH of the biochar were estimated. CHNS analysis was carried out to identify the nutrient profile. Structural characterization was done using FTIR and SEM Studies. Biochar produced at 600oC was found to be more suitable for decolourisation of the coir pith black liquor. FTIR analysis indicated peak changes while SEM analysis indicated surface area and porosity changes. Biochar decolourisation experiments were carried out on crude coir pith black liquor and also on lignin recovered coir pith black liquor. |

Abstract: | We present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO-SiO2 nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. Obvious enhancement of ultraviolet (UV) emission of the samples is observed, and the strongest UV emission of a typical ZnO-SiO2 nanocomposite is over three times stronger than that of pure ZnO. The nonlinearity of the silica colloid is low, and its nonlinear response can be improved by making composites with ZnO. These nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behavior. The observed nonlinear absorption is explained through two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absorption and nonlinear scattering. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increase with increasing ZnO volume fraction and can be attributed to the enhancement of exciton oscillator strength. ZnO-SiO2 is a potential nanocomposite material for the UV light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small limiting threshold. |
