Abstract: | Aim of the present work was to automate CSP process, to deposit and characterize CuInS2/In2S3 layers using this system and to fabricate devices using these films. An automated spray system for the deposition of compound semiconductor thin films was designed and developed so as to eliminate the manual labour involved in spraying and facilitate standardization of the method. The system was designed such that parameters like spray rate, movement of spray head, duration of spray, temperature of substrate, pressure of carrier gas and height of the spray head from the substrate could be varied. Using this system, binary, ternary as well as quaternary films could be successfully deposited. The second part of the work deal with deposition and characterization of CuInS2 and In2S3 layers respectively. In the case of CuInS2 absorbers, the effects of different preparation conditions and post deposition treatments on the optoelectronic, morphological and structural properties were investigated. It was observed that preparation conditions and post deposition treatments played crucial role in controlling the properties of the films. The studies in this direction were useful in understanding how the variation in spray parameters tailored the properties of the absorber layer. These results were subsequently made use of in device fabrication process.Effects of copper incorporation in In2S3 films were investigated to find how the diffusion of Cu from CuInS2 to In2S3 will affect the properties at the junction. It was noticed that there was a regular variation in the opto-electronic properties with increase in copper concentration.Devices were fabricated on ITO coated glass using CuInS2 as absorber and In2S3 as buffer layer with silver as the top electrode. Stable devices could be deposited over an area of 0.25 cm2, even though the efficiency obtained was not high. Using manual spray system, we could achieve devices of area 0.01 cm2 only. Thus automation helped in obtaining repeatable results over larger areas than those obtained while using the manual unit. Silver diffusion on the cells before coating the electrodes resulted in better collection of carriers. From this work it was seen CuInS2/In2S3 junction deposited through automated spray process has potential to achieve high efficiencies. |

Abstract: | This Thesis discussed molecules suitable for photorefractive effect. Out of the molecules studied, only one system was used to make photorefractive polymers system. Other molecules, especially, the electro-optic polymer, Poly(3-methacrloyl-1-(4'-nitro-4-azo-1'-phenyl)phenylalanine-co- methyl methacrylate) can be subjected to more detailed studies to explore the possibilities of using them for electro-optic applications. Though not included in the thesis, the efficient photoconductor, Poly(6-tert-butyl-3- phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine) sensitized with C60, which was described in Chapter 3 showed a low magnitude photovoltaic effect. This hints at the possibility of using this system for organic solar cells also. The thesis presented the initial observation of photorefractive effect in a polybenzoxazine based polymer system. A detailed analysis of the effect of C60, ECZ and DR1 can be carried out to check for the possibility of a high efficiency photorefractive system. |

Abstract: | In the present work, structural, optical and electrical properties of indium sulfide are tuned by specific and controlled doping. Silver, tin, copper and chlorine were used as the doping elements. In2S3 thin films for the present study were prepared using a simple and low cost “Chemical Spray Pyrolysis (CSP)” technique. This technique is adaptable for large-area deposition of thin films in any required shape and facilitates easiness of doping and/or variation of atomic ratio. It involves spraying a solution, usually aqueous, containing soluble salts of the constituents of the desired compound onto a heated substrate. Doping process was optimized for different doping concentrations. On optimizing doping conditions, we tuned the structural, optical and electrical properties of indium sulfide thin films making them perform as an ideal buffer layer. |

Abstract: | This thesis has discussed the development of a new metal ion doped panchromatic photopolymer for various holographic applications. High-quality panchromatic holographic recording material with high diffraction efficiency, high photosensitivity and high spatial resolution is one of the key factors for the successful recording of true colour holograms. The capability of the developed material for multicolour holography can be investigated. In the present work, multiplexing studies were carried out using He-Ne laser (632.8 nm). Multiplexing can be done using low wavelength lasers like Ar+ ion (488 nm) and frequency doubled Nd: YAG (532 nm) lasers, so as to increase the storage capacity. The photopolymer film studied had a thickness of only 130 Cm. Films with high thickness (~500 Cm) is highly essential for competitive holographic memories . Hence films with high thickness can be fabricated and efforts can be made to record more holograms or gratings in the material. In the present study, attempts were made to record data page in silver doped MBPVA/AA photopolymer film. Image of a checkerboard pattern was recorded in the film, which could be reconstructed with good image fidelity. Efforts can be made to determine the bit error rate (BER) which provides a quantitative measure of the image quality of the reconstructed image . Multiple holographic data pages can also be recorded in the material making use of different multiplexing techniques.Holographic optical elements (HOEs) are widely used in optical sensors, optical information processing, fibre optics, optical scanners and solar concentrators . The suitability of the developed film for recording holographic optical elements like lenses, beam splitters and filters can be studied. The suitability of a reflection hologram recorded in acrylamide based photopolymer for visual indication of environmental humidity is reported . Studies can be done to optimize the film composition for recording of reflection holograms. An improvement in the spatial resolution of PVA/acrylamide based photopolymer by using a low molecular-weight poly (vinyl alcohol) binder was recently reported . Effect of the molecular weight of the binder matrix on the holographic properties of the developed photopolymer system can be investigated.Incorporation of nanoparticles into photopolymer system is reported to enhance the resolution and improve the dimensional stability of the system . Hence efforts can be made to incorporate silver nanoparticles into the photopolymer and its influence on the holographic properties can be studied. This thesis was a small venture towards the realization of a big goal, a competent holographic recording material with excellent properties for practical holographic applications. As a result of the present research, we could successfully develop an efficient panchromatic photopolymer system and could demonstrate its suitability for recording transmission holograms and holographic data page. The developed photopolymer system is expected to have significant applications in the fields of true-color display holography, wavelength multiplexing holographic storage, and holographic optical elements. Highly concentrated and determined effort has yet to be put forth for this expectation to become a reality. |

Abstract: | Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is an optical technique that has emerged successful in the field of semiconductor material and device characterization. This technique is quite a powerful one which gives idea about the defect levels in a material, the band gap of the material, composition as well as material quality. Over the recent years it has received an elevation as a mainstream characterization technique. This thesis is an attempt to characterize each individual layer used in a thin film solar cell with special focus on the electrical properties. This will be highly beneficial from the lab as well as industrial point of view because electrical measurements generally are contact mode measurements which tend to damage the surface. As far as a thin film solar cell is concerned, the constituent layers are the transparent conducting oxide (TCO), absorber layer, buffer layer and top electrode contact. Each layer has a specific role to play and the performance of a solar cell is decided and limited by the quality of each individual layer. Various aspects of PL spectroscopy have been employed for studying compound semiconductor thin films [deposited using chemical spray pyrolysis (CSP)] proposed for solar cell application. This thesis has been structured in to seven chapters |

Abstract: | Photoconductivity (PC) processes may be the most suitable technique for obtaining information about the states in the gap. It finds applications in photovoItaics, photo detection and radiation measurements. The main task in the area of photovoltaics, is to increase the efficiency of the device and also to develop new materials with good optoelectronic properties useful for energy conversion, keeping the idea of cost effectiveness. Photoconduction includes generation and recombination of carriers and their transport to the electrodes. So thermal relaxation process, charge carrier statistics, effects of electrodes and several mechanisms of recombination are involved in photoconductivity.A major effect of trapping is to make the experimentally observed decay time of photocurrent, longer than carrier lifetime. If no trapping centers are present, then observed photocurrent will decay in the same way as the density of free carriers and the observed decay time will be equal to carrier lifetime. If the density of free carriers is much less than density of trapped carriers, the entire decay of photocurrent is effectively dominated by the rate of trap emptying rather than by the rate of recombination. In the present study, the decay time of carriers was measured using photoconductive decay (PCD) technique. For the measurements, the film was loaded in a liquid Helium cryostat and the temperature was controlled using Lakshore Auto tuning temperature controller (Model 321). White light was used to illuminate the required area of the sample. Heat radiation from the light source was avoided by passing the light beam through a water filter. The decay current. after switching off the illumination. was measured using a Kiethely 2000 multi meter. Sets of PCD measurements were taken varying sample temperature, sample preparation temperature, thickness of the film, partial pressure of Oxygen and concentration of a particular element in a compound. Decay times were calculated using the rate window technique, which is a decay sampling technique particularly suited to computerized analysis. For PCD curves with two well-defined regions, two windows were chosen, one at the fast decay region and the other at the slow decay region. The curves in a particular window were exponentially fitted using Microsoft Excel 2000 programme. These decay times were plotted against sample temperature and sample preparation temperature to study the effect of various defects in the film. These studies were done in order to optimize conditions of preparation technique so as to get good photosensitive samples. useful for photovoltaic applications.Materials selected for the study were CdS, In2Se3, CuIn2Se3 and CuInS2• Photoconductivity studies done on these samples are organised in six chapters including introduction and conclusion. |

Abstract: | In this work. Sub-micrometre thick CulnSe2 films were prepared using different techniques viz, selenization through chemically deposited Selenium and Sequential Elemental Evaporation. These methods are simpler than co-evaporation technique, which is known to be the most suitable one for CulnSe2 preparation. The films were optimized by varying the composition over a wide range to find optimum properties for device fabrication. Typical absorber layer thickness of today's solar cell ranges from 2-3m. Thinning of the absorber layer is one of the challenges to reduce the processing time and material usage, particularly of Indium. Here we made an attempt to fabricate solar cell with absorber layer of thickness <lmum. Here In2S3 was used as the buffer layer, replacing toxic CdS. |
