| Abstract: | Laser-induced damage is the principal limiting constraint in the design and operation of high-power laser systems used in fusion and other high-energy laser applications. Therefore, an understanding of the mechanisms which cause the radiation damage to the components employed in building a laser and a knowledge of the damage threshold of these materials are of great importance in designing a laser system and to operate it without appreciable degradation in performance. This thesis, even though covers three distinct problems for investigations using a dye Q-switched multimode Nd:glass laser operating at 1062 nm and emitting 25 ns (FWHM) pulses, lays its main thrust on damage threshold studies on thin films. Using the same glass laser two-photon excited fluorescence in rhodamine 6G and generation and characterisation of a carbon plasma have also been carried out. The thesis is presented in seven chapters. |

| Abstract: | A non-invasive technique is implemented to measure a parameter which is closely related to the distensibility of large arteries, using the second derivative of the infrared photoplethysmographic waveform. Thirty subjects within the age group of 20-61 years were involved in this pilot study. Two new parameters, namely the area of the photoplethysmographic waveform under the systolic peak, and the ratio of the time delay between the systolic and the diastolic peaks and the time period of the waveform (T/T) were studied as a function of age. It was found that while the parameter which is supposed to be a marker of distensibility of large arteries and T /T values correlate negatively with age, the area under the systolic peak correlates positively with age. The results suggest that the derived parameters could provide a simple, non-invasive means for studying the changes in the elastic properties of the vascular system as a function of age. |

| Abstract: | In this article we present the nonlinear optical properties of ZnO–TiO2–SiO2 nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. Nonlinear optical response of these samples is studied using nanosecond laser pulses at an off-resonance wavelength. The nonlinearity of the silica colloid is low and its nonlinear response can be improved by making composites with ZnO and TiO2. These nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behaviour. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increases with increasing ZnO volume fraction. The observed nonlinear absorption is explained by two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absorption and nonlinear scattering. ZnO–TiO2–SiO2 is a potential nanocomposite material for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small limiting threshold. |

| Abstract: | In the present work, we have investigated the nonlinear optical properties of self-assembled films formed from ZnO colloidal spheres by z-scan technique. The sign of the nonlinear component of refractive index of the material remains the same; however, a switching from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption has been observed as the material changes from colloid to self-assembled film. These different nonlinear characteristics can be mainly attributed to ZnO defect states and electronic effects when the colloidal solution is transformed into self-assembled monolayers. We investigated the intensity, wavelength and size dependence of saturable and reverse saturable absorption of ZnO self-assembled films and colloids. Values of the imaginary part of third-order susceptibility are calculated for particles of size in the range 20–300 nm at different intensity levels ranging from 40 to 325MW/cm2 within the wavelength range of 450–650 nm. |

| Abstract: | We report the use of an open photoacoustic cell configuration for the evaluation of thermal effusivity of liquid crystals. Initially, the method is calibrated using water and glycerol as transparent liquid samples, and the role of thermal conductivity of these liquids on the photoacoustic signal amplitude is discussed. To demonstrate the application of the present method for the evaluation of thermal effusivity of liquid crystals, we have used certain multicomponent nematic liquid crystal mixtures, namely BL001, BL002, BL032, and BL035. Each of these liquid crystal mixtures contains four to nine components and are primarily based on the cyanobiphenyl structure. The measured values of thermal effusivity of BL001 and BL002 were found to be almost the same, but differ from those of BL032 and BL035, which implies a difference in composition of the latter two from the former two mixtures. |

| Abstract: | Optical absorption studies of free base and rare earth incorporated phthalocyanine doped borate glass matrix are reported for the first lime. The absorption spectra recorded in the UV- VIS region show two well defined absorption bands of phthalocyanine (Pc) molecule, namely the Soret band (B) and the Q band. The Q band always shows its characteristic splitting in all the doped glass matrices and the intensities of these components are found to vary from one Pc to another. Some of the important optical parameters, namely optical absorption coefficient (a), molar extinction coefficient (ε), absorption cross section (σa), oscillator strength (f), electric dipole strength (q2), absorption half bandwidth (Δλ) of the principal optical transitions have also been evaluated. Moreover, the spectral dependence of refractive index (n) and thereby the optical dielectric constant (ε) on wavelength yielded values of carrier concentration to effective mass ratio (N/m*) of the phthalocyanine molecule in the present glassy systems. Optical band gap (Eg) and width of the band tail (Et) are computed and their variations among the prepared samples are also discussed. |

| Abstract: | A novel fibre optic sensor for the in situ measurement of the rate of deposition of thin films has been developed. Evanescent wave in the uncladded portion of a multimode fibre is utilised for this sensor development. In the present paper we demonstrate how this sensor is useful for the monitoring of the deposition rate of polypyrrole thin films, deposited by an AC plasma polymerisation method. This technique is simple, accurate and highly sensitive compared with existing techniques. |

| Abstract: | The nanosecond optical-limiting characteristics (at 532 nm) of some rare-earth metallo-phthalocyanines (Sm(Pc)2, Eu(Pc)2, and LaPc) doped in a copolymer matrix of poly(methyl methacrylate) and methyl-2-cyanoacrylate have been studied for the first time to our knowledge. The optical-limiting response is attributed to reverse saturable absorption due to excited-state absorption. The performance of LaPc in a copolymer host is studied at different linear transmissions. | Abstract: | An open cell photoacoustic (PA) configuration has been employed to evaluate the thermal diffusivity of intrinsic InP as well as InP doped with tin and iron. Thermal diffusivity data have been evaluated from variation of phase of PA signal as a function of modulation frequency. In doped samples, we observe a reduced value for thermal diffusivity in comparison with intrinsic InP. We also observed that, while the phase of the PA signal varies linearly with the square root of chopping frequency for doped samples, the intrinsic material does not exhibit such behaviour in the experimental frequency range. These results have been interpreted in terms of the heat generation and phonon assisted heat diffusion mechanisms in semiconductors. |

| Abstract: | An open-cell configuration of the photoacoustic (PA) technique is employed to determine the thermal and transport properties of intrinsic Si and Si doped with B (p-type) and P (n-type). The experimentally obtained phase of the PA signal under heat transmission configuration is fitted to that of theoretical model by taking thermal and transport properties, namely, thermal diffusivity, diffusion coefficient, and surface recombination velocity, as adjustable parameters. It is seen from the analysis that doping and also the nature of dopant have a strong influence on the thermal and transport properties of semiconductors. The results are interpreted in terms of the carrier-assisted and phonon-assisted heat transfer mechanisms in semiconductors as well as the various scattering processes occurring in the propagation of heat carriers. |

| Abstract: | In this paper, we present a laser-induced photoacoustic study on the photostability of laser dye Coumarin 540 doped in PMMA matrix and modified by the incorporation of low-molecular weight additives. The dependence of photostability of the dye on various experimental conditions, such as nature of solvents, incident optical power and dye concentration, is investigated in detail. The activation rates for the bleaching process are calculated for different concentrations and they suggest the possibility of two distinct mechanisms responsible for photodegradation. Further, analysis of the data confirms the linear dependence of photodegradation on the intensity of incident radiation. The role of different externally influencing parameters, such as wavelength and modulation frequency of incident radiation, is also discussed. |

| Abstract: | Photoacoustic spectrum of samarium phthalocyanine powder is recorded and compared with previously reported UV–vis absorption spectra of the same dissolved in different liquid and solid host media. The Davidov splitting of Q band is observed in the PA spectrum but the two bands are overlapped considerably and the shorter wavelength band is more intense and dominating one in the powder spectrum. |

| Abstract: | Non-destructive testing d multilayer dielectric coatings (SiO2/TiO2 structure) has been carried out using the photoacoustic technique. This technique makes use d a 10 mW He-Ne laser, a photoacoustic cell and a lock-in amplifier. The chopped He-Ne laser beam is allowed to fall on the sample placed in a photoacoustic cell. The acoustic signals thus generated are detected using a microphone and the resulting output is processed by a lock-in amplifier. The amplitude and phase of the signals were measured as a function of the chopping frequency. Striking step-like variations are observed in me phase against frequency plot which dearly reveals the different layers present in the multilayer structure. |

| Abstract: | We discuss an open photoacoustic cell study on sulfer-doped n-type InP wafer. The thermal diffusivity of the sample is evaluated from the phase data associated with the photoacoustic signal as a function of the modulation frequency under heat transmission configuration. Analysis is made on the basis of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory and the results are compared with those from earlier reported photoacoustic studies of semiconductors. Our investigation clearly indicates that the instantaneous thermalization process is the major heat diffusion mechanism responsible for the photoacoustic signal generation in an InP sample. |

| Abstract: | Complete thermal characterization of liquid crystal mixtures in the smectic phase consisting of various relative volume fractions of cholesterol and 1-hexadecanol have been carried out using the photoacoustic technique. Thermal diffusivity values of these liquid crystal mixtures are evaluated using the open cell photoacoustic technique whereas the thermal effusivity value is measured using the conventional photoacoustic technique. From the measured values of these transient thermophysical parameters, the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the sample under investigation are calculated. Analyses of the results show that all the thermophysical parameters depend strongly on the volume fraction of the constituents. Results are interpreted in terms of enhanced hydrogen bonding and the consequent enhancement in cohesive thermal energy transport with increasing volume fraction of 1-hexadecanol |
