| Abstract: | The catalyst compositions of the Zn1−xCOxFe2O4 (x= 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0) spiel series possessing ‘x’ values, x less than or equal to 0.5, are unique for selective N-monomethylation of aniline using methanol as the alkylating agent. Since dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is another potential non-toxic alkylating agent, alkylation of aniline was investigated over various Zn–Co ferrites using DMC as the alkylating agent. The merits and demerits of the two alkylating agents are compared. Catalytic activity followed a similar trend with respect to the composition of the ferrospinel systems. DMC is active at comparatively low temperature, where methanol shows only mild activity. However, on the selectivity basis, DMC as an alkylating agent could not compete with methanol, since the former gave appreciable amounts of N,N-dimethylaniline (NNDMA) even at low temperature where methanol gave nearly 99% N-methylaniline (NMA) selectivity. As in the case of methanol, DMC also did not give any C-alkylated products. |

| Abstract: | A comparative study on the anisole methylation with methanol over lanthanum-promoted Sn02 catalyst and its sulfate-doped analogue is presented. A maximum 2.6-xylenol selectivity of 82% was achieved at 400 degreeC under optimized conditions at an anisole conversion of 65% over lanthanum-promoted Sn02 catalyst. The sulfate modification resulted in the dealkylation of anisole to phenol followed by several unselective side reactions due to the creation of strong acid sites. The activity of lanthanum-modified tin oxide catalysts in the selective formation of 2.6-xylenol is ascribed to the presence of weak Lewis acid sites and comparatively stronger basic sites. |

The crystal structure of compound 9 has been determined by X-ray diffraction studies and is found that the dimer consists of two square pyramidal Cu(II) centers linked by two chlorine atoms. |

| Abstract: | The present thesis can be divided into three areas:1) the fabrication of a low temperature photo-luminescence and photoconductivity measuring unit 2) photo-luminescence in the chalcopyrite CulnSez and CulnS2 system for defect and composition analysis and 3) photo-luminescence and photo-conductivity of In:JS3. This thesis shows that photo-luminescence is one of most essential semiconductor characterization tool for a scientific group working on photovoltaics. Tools which can be robust, non-destructive, requiring minimal sample preparation for analysis and most informative of the device applications are sought after by industries and this thesis is towards establishing photo-luminescence as "THE" tool for semiconductor characterization. The possible application of photo-luminescence as a tool for compositional and quality analysis of semiconductor thin films has been worked upon by this thesis. Photo-conductivity complement photo-luminescence and together they provide all the information required for the fabrication of an opto-electronic device. |

| Abstract: | Rare earth exchanged Na–Y zeolites, H-mordenite, K-10 montmorillonite clay and amorphous silica-alumina were effectively employed for the continuous synthesis of nitriles. Dehydration of benzaldoxime and 4-methoxybenzaldoxime were carried out on these catalysts at 473 K. Benzonitrile (dehydration product) was obtained in near quantitative yield with benzaldoxime whereas; 4-methoxybenzaldoxime produces both Beckmann rearrangement (4-methoxyphenylformamide) as well as dehydration products (4-methoxy benzonitrile) in quantitative yields. The production of benzonitrile was near quantitative under heterogeneous reaction conditions. The optimal protocol allows nitriles to be synthesized in good yields through the dehydration of aldoximes. Time on stream (TOS) studies show decline in the activity of the catalysts due to neutralization of acid sites by the basic reactant and product molecules and water formed during the dehydration of aldoximes. |

| Abstract: | In this work we present the results of our attempt to build a compact photothermal spectrometer capable of both manual and automated mode of operation.The salient features of the system include the ability to analyse thin film, powder and polymer samples. The tool has been in use to investigate thermal, optical and transport properties. Binary and ternary semiconducting thin films were analysed for their thermal diffusivities. The system could perform thickness measurements nondestructively. Ion implanted semiconductors are widely studied for the effect of radiation induced defects. We could perform nondestructive imaging of defects using our spectrometer.The results reported in his thesis on the above in addition to studies on In2S3 and transparent conducting oxide ZnO have been achieved with this spectrometer. Various polymer samples have been easily analysed for their thermal diffusivities. The technique provided ease of analysis not achieved with conventional techniques like TGA and DSC. Industrial application of the tool has also been proved by analyzing defects of welded joints and adhesion of paints. Indigenization of the expensive lock-in-amplifier and automation has been the significant achievement in the course of this dissertation. We are on our way to prove the noise rejection capabilities of our PC LIA. |

| Abstract: | The nature of the diperiodatocuprate(III) (DPC) species present in aqueous alkaline medium has been investigated by a kinetic and mechanistic study on the oxidation of iodide by DPC. The reaction kinetics were studied over the 1.0 ´ 10)3±0.1 mol dm)3 alkali range. The reaction order with respect to DPC, as well as iodide, was found to be unity when [DPC] [I)]. In the 1.0 ´ 10)3±1.0 ´ 10)2 mol dm)3 alkali region, the rate decreased with increase in the alkali concentration and a plot of the pseudo-®rst order rate constant, k versus 1/[OH)] was linear. Above 5.0 ´ 10)2 mol dm)3, a plot of k versus [OH)] was also linear with a non-zero intercept. An increase in ionic strength of the reaction mixtures showed no e ect on k at low alkali concentrations, whereas at high concentrations an increase in ionic strength leads to an increase in k. A plot of 1/k versus [periodate] was linear with an intercept in both alkali ranges. Iodine was found to accelerate the reaction at the three di erent alkali concentrations employed. The observed results indicated the following equilibria for DPC. |

| Abstract: | In this thesis we report the synthsis and characterisation of new transition metal complexes of Pd(II),Cu(II),Ru(II) and Ir(III) of Schiff bases derived from quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde/3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde and 5-aminoindazole.6-aminoindazole or 8-aminoquinoline.The complexes have been characterised by spectral and analytical data.Pd(II) and Cu(II) form square planar complexes and Ru(III) and Ir(III) form ctahedral complexes with these Schiff bases.The DNA binding properties of theses synthesised complexes have been studied by various methods including electronic absoption spectroscopy,cyclic voltammetry,different pulse voltammetry and circular dichroism spectra were used.Gel electrophoresis experiments were also performed to investigate the DNA cleavage of theses complexes.Furthermore Ru(III) and Ir(III) complexes find application as oxidation and hydogenation catalsts. The studies on catalytic activities has been presented.The metal complexes presented in this thesis assure significance as they contribute to the development of new DNA binding agents and antibacterial and anticancer drugs. |

| Abstract: | The present study deals with the differential regulation of Dopamine content in pancreas and functional regulation of Dopamine D2 receptor in brain regions such as hypothalamus, brain stem, cerebral cortex and corpus striatum play an important role during pancreatic islets cell proliferation and insulin secretion. Though may reports are there implicating the functional interaction between DA receptor and pancreatic islets cell insulin secretion, the involvement of specific DA D2 receptors and changes in second messenger system during insulin secretion and pancreatic islets cell proliferation were not given emphasis. Down regulation of DA content in brain regions and pancreatic islets were observed during pancreatic regeneration. Up regulation of DA content in plasma and adrenals down regulated sympathetic activity in pancreas which cause an increase in insulin secretion and pancreatic islets cell proliferation during pancreatic regeneration. There was a differential regulation of DA D2 receptor in brain regions. The pancreatic islets DA D2 receptors were lip regulated during pancreatic regeneration. DA D2 receptor activation at specific concentration has accounted for increased pancreatic islets cell proliferation. In vitro experiments have proved the differential regulation of DA on insulin synthesis and pancreatic islets cell proliferation. Inhibitory effect of DA on cAMP and stimulatory effect of DA on IP3 through DA D2 receptors were observed in in vitro cell culture system. These effects are correlating with the DA, cAMP and IP3 content during pancreatic regeneration and islets cell proliferation. Up regulation of intracellular Ca2+ was also observed at 10-8 M DA, a specific concentration of DA which showed maximum increase of IP3 content in pancreatic islets through DA D2 receptor activation in in vitro culture. These in vitro data was highly correlating with the changes in DA, cAMP and IP3 content in pancreas during pancreatic regeneration and insulin secretion. Thus we conclude that there is a differential functional regulation of DA and DA D2 receptors in brain and pancreas during pancreatic regeneration. In vitro studies confirmed a concentration depend functional regulation of DA through DA D2 receptors on pancreatic islets cell proliferation and insulin secretion mediated through increased cAMP, IP3 and intracellular Ca2+ level. This will have immense clinical significance in the management in diabetes mellitus. |

| Abstract: | One-pot acetalizations of cyclohexanone. acetophenone and benzophenone were carried out using methanol over H-montmorillonite clay (a mesoporous material). silica, alumina, and different zeolites such as HFAU-Y.HBeta, H-ZSM-5, and H-mordenite. In all the cases a single product-the corresponding dimethylacetal-was obtained in high yields. Hemiacetal formation was not observed with any catalyst. A comparison of catalytic activity indicated that montmorillonite K-10 is the most active catalyst for the reaction. As evidenced by the reaction time studies, the catalyst decay is greater over the zeolite catalyst than over the clay. |

| Abstract: | Physico-chemical characterization of DY203/V2O5 systems prepared through wet impregnation method has been carried out using various techniques like EDX, XRD, FTIR. thermal studies, BET surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution analysis. The amount of vanadia incorporated has been found to influence the surface properties of dysprosia. The spectroscopic results combining with X-ray analysis reveal that vanadia species exist predominantly as isolated amorphous vanadyl units along with crystalline dysprosium orthovanadate. Basicity studies have been conducted by adsorption of electron acceptors and acidity and acid strength distribution by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. Cyclohexanol decomposition has been employed as a chemical probe reaction to examine the effect of vanadia on the acid base property of Dy2O3. Incorporation of vanadia titrates thc Lewis acid and base sites of Dy2O3, while an enhancement of Bronsted acid sites has been noticed. Data have been correlated with the catalytic activity of these oxides towards the vapour phase methylation of phenol |

| Abstract: | Dipyrromethene-Cu(II) derivatives possessing two dodecane alkyl chains have been used for the modification of gold electrodes. Electroactive host molecules have been incorporated into a lipophilic dodecanethiol SAM deposited onto gold electrodes through hydrophobic and van der Waals interactions (embedment technique). The presence of dipyrromethene-Cu(II) redox centers on the electrode surface was proved by cyclic voltammetry and Osteryoung square-wave voltammetry. The Au electrodes incorporating redox active Cu(II)-dipyrromethene SAMs were used for the direct voltammetric determination of paracetamol in human plasma. |

| Abstract: | A metalloporphyrin incorporated carbon paste sensor has been developed for the determination of metronidazole benzoate (MTZB). Zn(II) complex of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (3-methoxy-4-hydroxy phenyl) porphyrin (TMHPP) was used as the active material. The MTZB gave a well-defined reduction peak at - 0.713V in 0.1 mol l -1 phosphate buffer solution of pH around 7. Compared with bare carbon paste electrode (CPE), the TMHPP Zn(II) modified electrode significantly enhanced the reduction peak current of MTZB as well as lowered its reduction potential. Under optimum conditions the reduction peak current was proportional to MTZB concentration over the range 1×10-3 mol1-1 to 1×10-5mol1-1. The detection limit was found to be 4.36×10-6mol1-1 . This sensor has been successfully applied for the determination of MTZB in pharmaceutical formulations and urine samples. |

| Abstract: | The primary aim of these investigations was to probe the elecnuchemical and material science aspects of some selected metal phthalocyanines(MPcs).Metal phthalocyanines are characterised by a unique planar molecular structure. As a single class of compounds they have been the subject of ever increasing number of physicochemical and technological investigations. During the last two decades the literature on these compounds was flooded by an outpour of original publications and patents. Almost every branch of materials science has benefited by their application-swface coating, printing, electrophotography, photoelectrochemistry, electronics and medicine to name a few.The present study was confined to the electrical and electrochemical properties of cobalt, nickel, zinc. iron and copper phthalocyanines. The use of soluble Pes as corrosion inhibitor for aluminium was also investigated.In the introductory section of the thesis, the work done so far on MPcs is reviewed. In this review emphasis is given to their general methods of synthesis and the physicochemical properties.In phthalocyanine chemistry one of the formidable tasks is the isolation of singular species. In the second chapter the methods of synthesis and purification are presented with necessary experimental details.The studies on plasma modified films of CoPe, FePc, ZnPc. NiPc and CuPc are also presented.Modification of electron transfer process by such films for reversible redox systems is taken as the criterion to establish enhanced electrocatalytic activity.Metal phthalocyanines are p- type semiconductors and the conductivity is enhanced by doping with iodine. The effect of doping on the activation energy of the conduction process is evaluated by measuring the temperature dependent variation of conductivity. Effect of thennal treatment on iodine doped CoPc is investigated by DSC,magnetic susceptibility, IR, ESR and electronic spectra. The elecnucatalytic activity of such doped materials was probed by cyclic voltammetry.The electron transfer mediation characteristics of MPc films depend on the film thickness. The influence of reducing the effective thickness of the MPc film by dispersing it into a conductive polymeric matrix was investigated. Tetrasulphonated cobalt phthalocyanine (CoTSP) was electrostatically immobilised into polyaniline and poly(o-toluidine) under varied conditions.The studies on corrosion inhibition of aluminium by CoTSP and CuTSP and By virtue of their anionic character they are soluble in water and are strongly adsorbed on aluminium. Hence they can act as corrosion inhibitors. CoTSP is also known to catalyze the reduction of dioxygen.This reaction can accelerate the anodic dissolution of metal as a complementary reaction. The influence of these conflicting properties of CoTSP on the corrosion of aluminium was studied and compared with those of CuTSP.In the course of these investigations a number of gadgets like cell for measuring the electrical conductivity of solids under non-isothermal conditions, low power rf oscillator and a rotating disc electrode were fabricated. |

| Abstract: | The electron-donor properties of Sm2O3 activated at 300, 500, and 800°C are reported from studies on the adsorption of electron acceptors of various electron affinities (electron affinity values in eV are given in parentheses): 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquino-dimethane (2.84), 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2.40), p-dinitrobenzene (1.77), and m-dinitrobenzene (1.26) in acetonitrile and 1,4-dioxane. The extent of electron transfer during the adsorption was determined from magnetic measurements. The acid-base properties of Sm2O3 at different activation temperatures are reported using a set of Hammett indicators. Electron donor-acceptor interactions at interfaces are important in elucidating the adhesion forces. |
