| Abstract: | The liquid-phase Friedel-Crafts acylation of toluene using benzoyl chloride as benzoylating agent has heen carried out over Nix, Mn(l-x)Fe2 O4 (x=O, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0) type systems under different reaction conditions. It is observed that the systems with high 'x' values are effective for the conversion of BOC and the selective formation of 4-MBP. Selectivity for 4-MBP over MnFe2O4 is more than 90% under the optimized reaction conditions. Sites of moderate acidity is effective in calalyzing the benzoylation reaction. |

| Abstract: | The work presented in the thesis is centered around two important types of cathode materials, the spinel structured LixMn204 (x =0.8to1.2) and the phospho -oIivine structured LiMP04 (M=Fe and Ni). The spinel system LixMn204, especially LiMn204 corresponding to x= 1 has been extensively investigated to understand its structural electrical and electrochemical properties and to analyse its suitability as a cathode material in rechargeable lithium batteries. However there is no reported work on the thermal and optical properties of this important cathode material. Thermal diffusivity is an important parameter as far as the operation of a rechargeable battery is concerned. In LixMn204, the electronic structure and phenomenon of Jahn-Teller distortion have already been established theoretically and experimentally. Part of the present work is an attempt to use the non-destructive technique (NDT) of photoacoustic spectroscopy to investigate the nature of the various electronic transitions and to unravel the mechanisms leading to the phenomenon of J.T distortion in LixMn204.The phospho-olivines LiMP04 (M=Fe, Ni, Mn, Co etc) are the newly identified, prospective cathode materials offering extremely high stability, quite high theoretical specific capacity, very good cycIability and long life. Inspite of all these advantages, most of the phospho - olivines especially LiFeP04 and LiNiP04 show poor electronic conductivity compared to LixMn204, leading to low rate capacity and energy density. In the present work attempts have been made to improve the electronic conductivity of LiFeP04 and LiNiP04 by adding different weight percentage MWNT .It is expected that the addition of MWNT will enhance the electronic conductivity of LiFeP04 and LiNiP04 with out causing any significant structural distortions, which is important in the working of the lithium ion battery. |

| Abstract: | This thesis has focused on the synthesis and analysis of some important phosphors (nano, bulk and thin film) for display applications. ACTFEL device with SrS:Cu as active layer was also fabricated.Three bulk phosphors: SrS:Cu,CI; SrS:Dy,Cl; and SrS:Dy,Cu,Cl were synthesized and their structural, optical and electrical properties were investigated. Special emphasis was given to, the analysis of the role of defects and charge compensating centers, on the structural changes of the host and hence the luminance. A new model describing the sensitizing behaviour of Cu in SrS:Dy,Cu,Cl two component phosphor was introduced. It was also found that addition of NH4CI as flux in SrS:Cu caused tremendous improvement in the structural and luminescence properties.A novel technique for ACTFEL phosphor deposition at low temperature was introduced. Polycrystalline films of SrS:Cu,F were synthesized at low temperature by concomitant evaporation of host and dopant by electron beam evaporation and thermal evaporatin methods.Copper doped strontium sulphide nanophosphor was synthesized for the first time. Improvement in the luminescence properties was observed in the nanophosphor with respect to it' s bulk counterpart. |

| Abstract: | The current study is aimed at the development of a theoretical simulation tool based on Discrete Element Method (DEM) to 'interpret granular dynamics of solid bed in the cross section of the horizontal rotating cylinder at the microscopic level and subsequently apply this model to establish the transition behaviour, mixing and segregation.The simulation of the granular motion developed in this work is based on solving Newton's equation of motion for each particle in the granular bed subjected to the collisional forces, external forces and boundary forces. At every instant of time, the forces are tracked and the positions velocities and accelarations of each partcle is The software code for this simulation is written in VISUAL FORTRAN 90 After checking the validity of the code with special tests, it is used to investigate the transition behaviour of granular solids motion in the cross section of a rotating cylinder for various rotational speeds and fill fraction.This work is hence directed towards a theoretical investigation based on Discrete Element Method (DEM) of the motion of granular solids in the radial direction of the horizontal cylinder to elucidate the relationship between the operating parameters of the rotating cylinder geometry and physical properties ofthe granular solid.The operating parameters of the rotating cylinder include the various rotational velocities of the cylinder and volumetric fill. The physical properties of the granular solids include particle sizes, densities, stiffness coefficients, and coefficient of friction Further the work highlights the fundamental basis for the important phenomena of the system namely; (i) the different modes of solids motion observed in a transverse crosssection of the rotating cylinder for various rotational speeds, (ii) the radial mixing of the granular solid in terms of active layer depth (iii) rate coefficient of mixing as well as the transition behaviour in terms of the bed turnover time and rotational speed and (iv) the segregation mechanisms resulting from differences in the size and density of particles.The transition behaviour involving its six different modes of motion of the granular solid bed is quantified in terms of Froude number and the results obtained are validated with experimental and theoretical results reported in the literature The transition from slumping to rolling mode is quantified using the bed turnover time and a linear relationship is established between the bed turn over time and the inverse of the rotational speed of the cylinder as predicted by Davidson et al. [2000]. The effect of the rotational speed, fill fraction and coefficient of friction on the dynamic angle of repose are presented and discussed. The variation of active layer depth with respect to fill fraction and rotational speed have been investigated. The results obtained through simulation are compared with the experimental results reported by Van Puyvelde et. at. [2000] and Ding et at. [2002].The theoretical model has been further extended, to study the rmxmg and segregation in the transverse direction for different particle sizes and their size ratios. The effect of fill fraction and rotational speed on the transverse mixing behaviour is presented in the form of a mixing index and mixing kinetics curve. The segregation pattern obtained by the simulation of the granular solid bed with respect to the rotational speed of the cylinder is presented both in graphical and numerical forms. The segregation behaviour of the granular solid bed with respect to particle size, density and volume fraction of particle size has been investigated. Several important macro parameters characterising segregation such as mixing index, percolation index and segregation index have been derived from the simulation tool based on first principles developed in this work. |

| Abstract: | In the present study, a detailed investigation on the alterations of muscarinic M1, M3, α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAchR), GABA receptors and its subtypes; GABAAα1 and GABAB in the brain regions of streptozotocin induced diabetic and insulin induced hypoglycemic rats were carried out. Gene expression of acetylcholine esterase (AChE), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), GAD, GLUT3, Insulin receptor, superoxide dismutase (SOD), Bax protein, Phospholipase C and CREB in hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic rat brain were studied. Muscarinic M1, M3 receptors, AChE, ChAT, GABAAα1, GABAB, GAD, Insulin receptor, SOD, Bax protein and Phospholipase C expression in pancreas was also carried out. The molecular studies on the CNS and PNS damage will elucidate the therapeutic role in the corrective measures of the damage to the brain during hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. |

| Abstract: | The present work is to understand the alterations of total Muscarinic and Muscarinic MI receptors in brain and pancreatic islets of Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. The work focuses on the evaluation of the antihyperglycemic activity of aqueous extracts of Aegle marmelose and Costus pictus leaves in vivo and the changes in the total Muscarinic and Muscarinic MI receptors during diabetes and after the treatment with insulin. The insulin secretory activity of Aegle marmelose and Costus pictus leaf extracts and the effect of cholinergic receptor agonist were investigated in vitro using rat primary pancreatic islet culture. Muscarinic MI receptor kinetics and gene expression during diabetes and regulation of insulin secretion by Aegle marmelose and Costus pie/us leaf extracts will help us to elucidate the role of Muscarinic and Muscarinic MI receptors in hyperglycemia and the regulatory activity of these plant extracts on insulin secretion through Muscarinic receptors. |

| Abstract: | This thesis has discussed the development of a new metal ion doped panchromatic photopolymer for various holographic applications. High-quality panchromatic holographic recording material with high diffraction efficiency, high photosensitivity and high spatial resolution is one of the key factors for the successful recording of true colour holograms. The capability of the developed material for multicolour holography can be investigated.In the present work, multiplexing studies were carried out using He-Ne laser (632.8 nm). Multiplexing can be done using low wavelength lasers like Ar+ ion (488 nm) and frequency doubled Nd: YAG (532 nm) lasers, so as to increase the storage capacity. The photopolymer film studied had a thickness of only 130 Cm. Films with high thickness (~500 Cm) is highly essential for competitive holographic memories . Hence films with high thickness can be fabricated and efforts can be made to record more holograms or gratings in the material.In the present study, attempts were made to record data page in silver doped MBPVA/AA photopolymer film. Image of a checkerboard pattern was recorded in the film, which could be reconstructed with good image fidelity. Efforts can be made to determine the bit error rate (BER) which provides a quantitative measure of the image quality of the reconstructed image . Multiple holographic data pages can also be recorded in the material making use of different multiplexing techniques.Holographic optical elements (HOEs) are widely used in optical sensors, optical information processing, fibre optics, optical scanners and solar concentrators . The suitability of the developed film for recording holographic optical elements like lenses, beam splitters and filters can be studied.The suitability of a reflection hologram recorded in acrylamide based photopolymer for visual indication of environmental humidity is reported . Studies can be done to optimize the film composition for recording of reflection holograms.An improvement in the spatial resolution of PVA/acrylamide based photopolymer by using a low molecular-weight poly (vinyl alcohol) binder was recently reported . Effect of the molecular weight of the binder matrix on the holographic properties of the developed photopolymer system can be investigated.Incorporation of nanoparticles into photopolymer system is reported to enhance the resolution and improve the dimensional stability of the system . Hence efforts can be made to incorporate silver nanoparticles into the photopolymer and its influence on the holographic properties can be studied.This thesis was a small venture towards the realization of a big goal, a competent holographic recording material with excellent properties for practical holographic applications. As a result of the present research, we could successfully develop an efficient panchromatic photopolymer system and could demonstrate its suitability for recording transmission holograms and holographic data page. The developed photopolymer system is expected to have significant applications in the fields of true-color display holography, wavelength multiplexing holographic storage, and holographic optical elements. Highly concentrated and determined effort has yet to be put forth for this expectation to become a reality. |

| Abstract: | This thesis deals with the synthesis and charcterisation of some supported transition metal complexes and their catalytic properties. Two industrially important reactions were carried out: i) cyclohexanol oxidation and ii) hydrodesulphurization of diesel. Thesis is divided into nine chapters. An overview of the heterogenised homogeneous systems is given in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 deals with the materials and methods used for the preparation and characterisation. Details regarding the synthesis and characterisation of zeolite encapsulated transition metal complexes are given in Chapter 3 to Chapter 7. In Chapter 8, the results of catalytic activity studies of the cyclohexanol oxidation using the zeolite encapsulated complexes are presented. Details of preparation of hydrodesulphurization catalysts through the molecular designed dispersion method, their characterization and catalytic activity studies are presented in Chapter 9. References are given at the end of the thesis. |

| Abstract: | This thesis entitled' On Queues with Interruptions and Repeat or Resumption of Service' introduces several new concepts into queues with service interruption. It is divided into Seven chapters including an introductory chapter. The following are keywords that we use in this thesis: Phase type (PH) distribution, Markovian Arrival Process (MAP), Geometric Distribution, Service Interruption, First in First out (FIFO), threshold random variable and Super threshold random variable. In the second chapter we introduce a new concept called the 'threshold random variable' which competes with interruption time to decide whether to repeat or resume the interrupted service after removal of interruptions. This notion generalizes the work reported so far in queues with service interruptions. In chapter 3 we introduce the concept of what is called 'Super threshold clock' (a random variable) which keeps track of the total interruption time of a customer during his service except when it is realized before completion of interruption in some cases to be discussed in this thesis and in other cases it exactly measures the duration of all interruptions put together. The Super threshold clock is OIl whenever the service is interrupted and is deactivated when service is rendered. Throughout this thesis the first in first out service discipline is followed except for priority queues. |

| Abstract: | This thesis lays importance in the preparation and characterization of a few selected representatives of the ferrite family in the nanoregime. The candidates being manganese zinc ferrite and cobalt ferrite prepared by coprecipitation and sol-gel combustion techniques respectively. The thesis not only stresses importance on the preparation techniques and optimization of the reaction conditions, but emphasizes in investigating the various properties namely structural, magnetic and electrical. Passivated nickel nanocomposites are synthesized using polystyrene beads and adopting a novel route of ion exchange reduction. The structural and magnetic properties of these magnetic nanocomposites are correlated. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) exhibited by these materials are also investigated with a view to finding out the potential of these materials as magnetic refrigerants. Calculations using numerical methods are employed to evaluate the entropy change on selected samples. |

| Abstract: | In this paper, we study a k-out-of-n system with single server who provides service to external customers also. The system consists of two parts:(i) a main queue consisting of customers (failed components of the k-out-of-n system) and (ii) a pool (of finite capacity M) of external customers together with an orbit for external customers who find the pool full. An external customer who finds the pool full on arrival, joins the orbit with probability and with probability 1− leaves the system forever. An orbital customer, who finds the pool full, at an epoch of repeated attempt, returns to orbit with probability (< 1) and with probability 1 − leaves the system forever. We compute the steady state system size probability. Several performance measures are computed, numerical illustrations are provided. |

| Abstract: | Two stage processes consisting of precursor preparation by thermal evaporation followed by chalcogenisation in the required atmosphere is found to be a feasible technique for the PV materials such as n-Beta In2S3, p-CulnSe2, p-CulnS2 and p-CuIn(Sel_xSx)2. The growth parameters such as chalcogenisation temperature and duration of chalcogenisation etc have been optimised in the present study.Single phase Beta-In2S3 thin films can be obtained by sulfurising the indium films above 300°C for 45 minutes. Low sulfurisation temperatures required prolonged annealing after the sulfurisation to obtain single phase Beta-1n2S3, which resulted in high material loss. The maximum band gap of 2.58 eV was obtained for the nearly stoichiometric Beta-In2S3 film which was sulfurised at 350°C. This wider band gap, n type Beta-In2S3 can be used as an alternative to toxic CdS as window layer in photovoltaics .The systematic study on the structural optical and electrical properties of CuInSe2 films by varying the process parameters such as the duration of selenization and the selenization temperature led to the conclusion that for the growth of single-phase CuInSe2, the optimum selenization temperature is 350°C and duration is 3 hours. The presence of some binary phases in films for shorter selenization period and lower selenization temperature may be due to the incomplete reaction and indium loss. Optical band gap energy of 1.05 eV obtained for the films under the optimum condition.In order to obtain a closer match to the solar spectrum it is desirable to increase the band gap of the CulnSe2 by a few meV . Further research works were carried out to produce graded band gap CuIn(Se,S)2 absorber films by incorporation of sulfur into CuInSe2. It was observed that when the CulnSe2 prepared by two stage process were post annealed in sulfur atmosphere, the sulfur may be occupying the interstitial positions or forming a CuInS2 phase along with CuInSe2 phase. The sulfur treatment during the selenization process OfCu11 ln9 precursors resulted in Culn (Se,S)2 thin films. A band gap of 1.38 eV was obtained for the CuIn(Se,S)2.The optimised thin films n-beta 1n2S3, p-CulnSe2 and p-Culn(Sel-xSx)2 can be used for fabrication of polycrystalline solar cells. |

The products and the catalyst were separated by simple biphasic extraction. The catalyst was found to be reusable. |
